I met Michael in 1983 while on contract in his Department. I was struggling at the time professionally and he changed my life forever by asking me to think differently about myself --- positively. He had such a clear way of thinking about attitudes, and how we damage ourselves with the wrong ones and how we can choose to take control. I always wanted to tell him what a difference he had made to my life.
I am so sorry for your loss, Bruce.

I got to know Michael in 1997 when he hired me to work in the Linguistics department. He was the best boss I ever had,...kind, understanding, honest and fair in everything he did. Over the years he became my friend and mentor.
There are no words to describe what Michael meant
to me. I know he was a giant in his field of information structure, but to me he was a wonderful friend who was always there to listen to whatever it was that was going on in my life and work.
I was blessed to have had him in my life because I am a better person for having known him.
I miss you Michael, and you will always live in my heart.

Michael was an extraordinary man whose intellectual accomplishments were only eclipsed by his kindness and humanity. He crafted a beautiful and loving relationship with his partner Bruce and was a loved and loving friend to many. I will miss him.

Michael and I grew up across the street from each other and became quick friends. From a young age he showed his enormous capacity for loving care and understanding, well beyond his years. He taught me the popular dances of the time and we spent hours talking, laughing and dancing up a storm with our close friends creating some of the most treasured memories of our lives. When he was at McGill U., we met every day for lunch and had the most interesting conversations on many different subjects. He had a great thirst for knowledge and I had no doubt that he would make a mark in his chosen field. Michael's kindness, strength and generosity of spirit helped me through a most difficult time of my life. He helped me find humour through the darkness and acceptance of life-altering changes. I will always be grateful to him for being a beacon of light and I am sure he was that to many, many others.
My heartfelt condolences to his loving partner, family and friends. A new star shines in the heavens.
