GILBERT, Minnie
Passed away peacefully on January 2, 2013 in her 98th year. Born in 1915, Minnie and her family were among the early residents of Burnaby when it was the rural link between Vancouver and New Westminster. Predeceased by her mother Anne, father Robert, brothers Thomas, Robert and James, sisters Janet, Anne, Elizabeth, Jessie and Pearl. "Auntie Minnie" is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in BC, Alberta and Ontario; and "great aunt" and "great-great aunt" to many more. Minnie lived most of her adult life in Vancouver's west side. She took great pleasure singing in the Point Grey Presbyterian church choir for many years, playing the piano, gardening, painting ceramics at Birch Bay, and putting her Red Cross home nursing training to good use helping elderly friends she had made in the neighbourhood while walking her dog, Pal. She was a member of Legion branch 142 ladies auxilary for 31 years and was an avid bowler in the Varsity Ridge ladies bowling league for 27 years, well into her mid-80's. Minnie will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews as someone who always had time to play with them when they were children. Several nephews and international students will also remember the 'good times' while boarding with Minnie and Jessie and studying at UBC. For 82 years of her life Minnie lived with and was cared for by her sister Jessie. After Jessie's passing Minnie moved to Broadway Pentacostal Lodge where her care was overseen by her nephew Sherwood and his wife, Nadine. A celebration life will be held in the chapel at Broadway Pentacostal Lodge, 1377 Lamey's Mill Road, Vancouver on Thursday, January 10 at 1:30 pm. A reception will follow. The family wishes to thank the 3rd floor nursing staff and the many care aides for the kindness, care and compassion shown to Minnie during her 15 year residency at the lodge. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the lodge's craft fund would be appreciated.
