March 19, 1925 - April 9, 2012
On the sunny afternoon of April 9, 2012 amid the cherry blossoms and sounds of spring, a day before his 59th wedding anniversary, Ray quietly passed away after a long battle with health issues. Ray was a native "Vancouverite" born on March 19, 1925 to Jack and Fay Drain. He attended King Edward High School and upon graduation he enlisted for active duty with the Canadian Army. He served in England and Holland and was on leave waiting for his posting to the Pacific when the war ended. He attended UBC and shortly after graduating he met the love of his life, Margot, while playing badminton at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club. They were married on April 10, 1953 and settled on the North Shore where they raised their family. Ray was a devoted family man, an animal lover, a wonderful Dad and Grandpa. He was an avid reader and his experience in the army gave him a passion for history and current events which generated many stimulating dinner conversations. When he retired in 1988 he discovered his love for travel and he and Margot travelled extensively around the world. Ray is survived by his wife Margot, daughters Debbie (John), Colleen (Christian), Terri (Loren), and granddaughter Sheena. A Celebration of Ray's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Highland United Church, 3255 Edgemont Blvd., North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers donations to the SPCA or charity of your choice would be gratefully appreciated.
