Murray passed away at Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, after a short illness. He was born in Hudson, Quebec and lived there until the family moved to Vancouver in 1965. He attended UBC and graduated with a BA in 1972, then earned a Masters Degree in Education 1975. Murray taught high school in Surrey for many years where he was department head for the French and Phys Ed programs. He coached several sports including basketball, rugby, and grass hockey. An avid sportsman, he played football for UBC, rugby for the Meralomas, and grass hockey for the Grass Hoppers. He also belonged to Hazelmere Golf Club where he was a long-standing member. He curled for the Marpole Curling Club after his retirement. Utah, as he often called himself, was liked and respected by many. He had his opinions, and was not overly concerned what others thought of him. Murray did not live a long life; however, he enjoyed getting the most out of it. Life does have its benefits. And he loved to travel. He is survived by his brother Lyle, sister Janice Johnson who was at his bed side when he died, his nieces Keltie and Nicola Jeakins, nephew Shane Johnson, and aunt Joan (Toots) Jeakins. In lieu of flowers, a donation towards the Meraloma Club, Kitsilano 2390 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V6K 2J3. A celebration of Murray's life will be at the Meralomas Club House on June 8, between 1 and 4 p.m.
