Peter LUSZTIG Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3, 2014.
LUSZTIG, Peter A.
May 12, 1930 - January 26, 2014
Peter was born in Budapest in 1930 to Alfred and Zsuzsa Lusztig He moved at a young age to Asia, where his father practiced medicine in Shanghai and Hong Kong. In 1948, Peter came to Vancouver to attend UBC. He completed his MBA at the University of Western Ontario and his PhD at Stanford. He returned to UBC as a professor of Finance. He brought his values and dedication to education to that position and later to his fourteen-year tenure as dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration. After retiring from UBC, he was appointed federal representative to the BC Treaty Commission. Peter greatly enjoyed his involvement in that difficult and rewarding process for seven years, making many lasting friendships. In many ways, Peter was an old-fashioned man. He was unfailingly courteous, kind and respectful to everyone he met. He was a man who listened more than he spoke. Above all, Peter loved his family. He was married to Penny for nearly 53 years and had three children of whom he was extremely proud: Michael (Chrissy), Cameron (Caroline) and Carrie (Kyle). He was an adoring grandfather to Simon, Owen, Mitchell and Anika. Peter was loved and enormously loving to us all and we will miss him more than words can ever express. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 6 at St. Mary's Kerrisdale, 2490 West 37th Avenue. Reception to follow at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, 4300 S. W. Marine Drive. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the National Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation would be appreciated.

I had the honour of serving on two corporate boards with Peter. Most vivid in my memory were times when we were discussing (really, engaging in debates about) how best to measure risk on capital investments. He was always thoughtful (he actually assigned me some 'readings' along the way (as though I was a student in his class), which always amused me), courteous, well-prepared and a pleasure with whom to work.

To Penny and the extended Lusztig family, you have my most sincere condolences.

Dr. Lusztig was my Finance professor at UBC in 1966. It was a treat to be in his class.

Peter was one of my business professors at UBC in the early 1970"s. I thoroughly enjoyed his classes, and gained an invaluable insight and appreciation for the business world through his analytical mind and commentary. Peter was a very effective teacher & gracious listener, always cheery & friendly; his door was always open to those who were in need of any extra help, guidance or perhaps a warm chat. Although I didn't cross paths with Peter after graduation, to this day I never forgot him or his contribution to my education & personal development. My deepest & sincere condolences go out to Peter's family, close friends and associates.

Peter was a tremendous help in the BC Treaty process, a distinguished , thoughtful and delightful contributor to a very challenging arena. He will be greatly missed as a wise man with new ideas and old-fashioned values.
