TARBOTTON, Rebecca (Becky) Mary
Died in a swimming accident on December 26, 2012 while on holiday in Mexico. She is survived by her husband Mateo Williford, her mother Mary, brothers Jesse and Cameron, and predeceased by her father Mike. Born on July 30, 1973 in Vancouver, Becky attended Prince of Wales Mini School, McGill University (Geography) and UBC (Master's in Community Planning). Driven by her strong sense of justice, Becky worked on environmental and social issues throughout her life in Canada, Ladakh, England, and the US. She settled in San Francisco with frequent visits to her native BC and beloved family retreat on Hornby Island. In 2010, she became the first woman executive director of the prominent US environmental organization, Rainforest Action Network. Becky's leadership was visionary; in her own words, "What we're really talking about, if we're really honest with ourselves, is transforming everything about the way we live on this planet". Our Becky will be missed beyond measure and remembered for her bold spirit, passionate presence, unique pairing of humility and drama, and her unabashed embrace of life and loved ones. She was equally comfortable on the dance floor or out in nature. Even with her full schedule, Becky loved a hot bath, a good book, a mug of tea, long walks, playing her fiddle, and evenings spent eating, drinking and relishing the company of her friends and family. She had a rare gift of truly connecting with people. She treasured and fostered her closest friendships, no matter how far away her travels took her. Becky's brightness will continue to light us all from within. May we be inspired by her brightness and continue her life's work of changing our world for the better. Becky's life will be honoured at St. Philip's Church (3737 W. 27th Ave, Vancouver) on January 11 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Power of Hope or another social/environmental organization.
