BLANEY, Roy McIlroy
April 16, 1939 - March 27, 2013
At 4:55 p.m. in Palliative Care at Lions Gate Hospital with Diane, his wife of 44 years and the love of his life, holding his hand, Roy passed away peacefully. Born in Nottingham, England, Roy was a proud Ulsterman raised in Drumaness, N. Ireland. Predeceased by his parents Agnes and Hugh Blaney, he was Dad to Keri-An and Ryan, Roy to son-in-law Brendan, PopPop to Riley and Connor. He will be sorely missed by them and his siblings Jimmy (Anne), Billy (Sharon) and David in Ontario; Lynda (Kevin) and Chrissie in Drumaness; and his in-laws Colin, Roxanne (Gary) and Daryl. Roy immigrated to Ontario in 1964 before moving to B.C. He lived and worked as a millwright in Ocean Falls, Tahsis and Powell River before moving to Vancouver in the summer of '67 where he met Diane on the beach at English Bay. It was here and then that they formed life-long friendships with people from around the world. Through his year-long battle with cancer these long-time friends called regularly to let him know he was loved and supported. A charter season ticket holder with the Canucks, hoping against hope each year that they would win the "Cup," he spent his last night watching a winning game with Ryan. He delighted in the grandchildren his daughter gave him and treasured the time spent with them. Friends from work who shared his pleasure in fishing will remember that he won the trophy last; North Shore Winter Club curlers will remember his enthusiasm for curling; neighbours will remember him as an avid gardener and, in the years since retirement, his golf group will remember his passion for the game and joy in winning the money on the Par 3s. With his love of golf in mind, on Thursday, April 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. the family invites friends to "Remember Roy" at a reception to be held at Northlands Golf Course, 3400 Anne MacDonald Way, North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charitable organization of your choice would be appreciated.
