SCHMIDT _ Marianna. Died Friday, May 27th, 2005, aged 87, at Purdy Pavilion, UBC Hospital, after a long decline in health. Born in Hungary in 1918, she became a displaced person in 1945 and arrived in Canada in 1953, without family or friends. Marianna studied medical technology in Edmonton before settling in Vancouver, working as a lab technician at Vancouver General Hospital at night and attending the Vancouver School of Art during the day. She graduated from the VSA in 1964 and distinguished herself as an award-winning printmaker who exhibited internationally during the 1960's and 1970's. While continuing to support herself as a lab tech, she travelled widely and worked in many other media, including painting on paper. In the 1980's and 1990's, she had solo shows at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Charles H. Scott Gallery and UBC Fine Arts Gallery. A funeral mass will be celebrated for her at 10 am on Wednesday, June 1st, 2005 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, 2028 W. 7th Ave., Vancouver.
