Helen Ilona Barakso

The Guest Book is expired.

Helen Ilona Barakso September 13, 1936 - March 25, 2014 Helen Barakso, née Zoltay, passed away peacefully in North Vancouver, BC with her husband John by her side. She is at peace after a courageous battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her mother, Ilona Zoltay, her father Endre Aurél Zoltay and her brother István Endre Zoltay (Bandi/Andy).

She was a strong and devoted wife, an amazing mother to Ilona (Charles) and John Jr. (Kim) and grandmother to Martin, Carolyn, Julia, Ava and Cole. Helen was born Ilona Magdolma Zoltay, in Budapest, Hungary and fled the Russian occupation of that country with her family in 1957. Her brother, Andy, joined the Sopron Division of the Faculty of Forestry at UBC and through him she met John. They married in 1960 and eventually settled on the North Shore. She worked tirelessly alongside him raising their family and building their business. In her later years she suffered from a debilitating combination of depression and schizophrenia but remained a gentle, loving mother. She suffered quietly with cancer for many years until it became too painful to ignore. She will be deeply missed. We would like to thank Drs. Peter Edmunds and Allan Burgmann at Lions Gate Hospital, Dr. Stephen Kiraly and Sandra Curtain of the North Shore Older Adult Mental Health Unit as well as North Shore Home and Palliative Services for their exceptional and considerate care of Helen. Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service on Monday April 21, 2014 at 2:00 pm, First Memorial, Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd. North Vancouver, BC. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the HOpe Centre through the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation
