LANCASTER, Cullis (Cully) Stanley Jardine
Cully Lancaster passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on Sunday May 4, 2014 at age 94.
Loving husband of Cynthia for 54 years, proud father of Lisa Kershaw (Jim) and Mark, and enthusiastic grandpa of Gillian, William and Robert Kershaw.
Cully was born March 7, 1920 in Vancouver and raised in Moose Jaw, SK. When the Second World War started, he volunteered early for the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He trained at HMCS Royal Roads, Victoria as an officer and was at sea for most of the war, serving in the Battle of the Atlantic and in convoys across the Mediterranean aboard HMCS Moose Jaw and HMCS Ribble. On D-Day, he carried troops to Juno Beach aboard LCI 135. A cherished memory, at the age of 89, was returning to Normandy with his grandchildren.
He graduated from Queen's University in 1947 and began a career in transportation, initially with Hamilton Street Railway and latterly Johnson Terminals. Queen's held a special place in his heart and he was thrilled when his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter all graduated from there.
He was a committed volunteer with the Naval Officers' Assoc of BC and Canada, the Pacific Open Heart Assoc and St Christopher's Church, where he worshipped for over 50 years. But it was his family from which he derived the greatest pleasure: golfing, cruising, and attending hundreds of his grandchildren's sports events.
Sincere thanks to Dr Robert Scott and the palliative team at Lions Gate Hospital for their compassionate care.
A celebration of life will be held at St Christopher's Anglican Church, 1068 Inglewood, West Vancouver, Saturday, May 17 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Naval Endowment Fund or Pacific Open Heart Assoc. will be gratefully appreciated.
