DeFAZIO, Salvatore
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our husband, father and Nonno, Salvatore (Sam) DeFazio on Saturday, June 14, 2014. Salvatore was born on October 13, 1929 in Sambiase, Italy. At the age of 20, he was the first of his family to immigrate to Vancouver, Canada. There he met and married Guiseppina Catania on February 20, 1954. Salvatore was a highly skilled steel fabricator known and admired for his ornamental steel work. Taking life long pride in his craft, he worked until the age of 81. Salvatore loved to travel. He and Guiseppina would visit Puerta Vallarta, Mexico yearly to be with the many friends they came to know. He would often tell stories of the many other places around the world they visited, including Europe and South America. One of Salvatore's great passions was the game of soccer. He most notably supported the Italian national team and the Vancouver Whitecaps. He attended Whitecaps games until the age of 83. Salvatore loved life and what it had to offer. Above all else, Salvatore's heart lies with his family. His wife of 60 years, Guiseppina, and their four children, Mariella (Nazzareno), Carlo (Sandra), Ray (Elena) and Adriana (Reece), were his pride. His 12 grandchildren, Nancy (Enzo), Paolo (Karen), Josie, Stephania, Melisa, Daniela, Cristina, Danae, Rielle, Kayla, Dario and Noah, and his five great-grandchildren, Anthony, Gianluca, Kianna, Mataya and Talia filled his heart with joy. He was also blessed with an incredible extended family that included his brother, five sisters, many sisters and brothers in-law, nieces and nephews. Salvatore would often say, "I'm not rich with money, but I am rich with family." Salvatore was predeceased by his parents Marietta and Giovanni DeFazio. The family would like to thank the staff at Eagle Ridge Hospital for making Salvatore's time there as comfortable as possible. A special thanks to Roxanne and Contessa for their extra care and attention. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Children's Hospital, A Celebration of Salvatore's Life will be held on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 11:30 a.m., St. Helen's Church, 3860 Triumph Street, Burnaby. Entombment to follow at Ocean View Burial Park, South Mausoleum, 2:30 p.m., 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby.
We will miss you; you will be in our hearts forever.
