Hajra Patel Burton - Hajra, died peacefully on Friday July 4, 2014 in Vancouver. Predeceased by brothers Moosa, Ahmed, Suleiman, Ismail and Yusuf, sisters Mariam, Fatima, Ghadija and Juleikha. Survived by her husband Howard, sisters Hawa in Vancouver, and Ayesha in Toronto, and other family members in South Africa, Britain, and St. John, NB. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, she travelled to England to study nursing, then emigrated to Canada. She worked in Montreal, Ottawa and New York, then later in Kingston, ON (Queen's University); London, ON (University of Western Ontario); and Vancouver. After several years in operating room nursing, Hajra decided to qualify as an occupational therapist, and then became an O.T. instructor. She completed a PhD in Higher Education at University of Pittsburg. Our most sincere thanks to the Palliative Care Team at Community Health Services, St. Elizabeth Team 25, and the Palliative Care team at St. Paul's Hospital. You are all warm, personable and caring people. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, July 8 at 10:00am at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 550 West 14th Avenue, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice, preferably Doctors without Borders or the David Suzuki Foundation.
