Cheryl Hutcherson Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jul. 21, 2012.
Our dear Cheryl left this world peacefully after losing her long and brave battle with cancer on July 12, 2012 at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, the same place she joined it 57 years ago. She is survived by father Bill, siblings Rodney, Donald and Erin, adopted sister Patt Wilhelm and her beloved dog Bridget. She is predeceased by her mother Barbara who passed away in 2004.

After graduating from high school in Richmond in 1973, Cheryl began a 37 year career in the Social Services Branch of the B.C. Government rising among its ranks to the position of computer program trainer.

Always giving back, each year Cheryl and her team of elves spent countless hours each Christmas ensuring thousands of children received a response to their letters to Santa.

Cheryl's true calling though came from her love of theatre. A respected publicist for many community and professional theatre groups in the Vancouver area, Cheryl worked tirelessly as a promoter of the talent in Vancouver. Cheryl received the ultimate honour from the theatre community she served as the recipient of the Mary Phillips Award for Behind-the-Scenes-Achievement at the 2011 Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards.

A celebration of Cheryl's life is being planned for August. Details will be posted on Cheryl's Facebook page at http://facebook.com/cheryl.hutcherson and on her blog at http://ourcheryl.blogspot.ca.

An avid musical theatre enthusiast and with a desire to help nurture young talent, Cheryl requested that a scholarship fund be set-up in her name with the Applause Musical Society. The scholarship will be established as an annual financial award to be given to a deserving student in a post-secondary theater program to assist them with the payment of voice, dance or acting coach. Donations to the scholarship fund can be made online at http://applausemusicals.com.

You'll be with us like a handprint on our heart, and now whatever way our stories end, we know you have re-written ours by being our friend.

Dearest Cheryl, I have just sent off a letter to Dad Bill, trying to say some of the things I wanted to say but couldn't on line. I'm missing you every day, especially on facebook where you always had something interesting to say or post, it's not the same without you. We will never forget you and we will make sure the kids remember you too, what a great supporter of young people in the arts you were and we are forever grateful to you for that. All our love, Ann, Brian, Ethan, Roan and Holden too

It was an honor and a privilege to work with Cheryl on her annual Santa letters project for many years. WE all discovered what Cheryl intuitively knew: that we would get much more from the project than we gave. Cheryl and I shared a birthday and a passion for the musical theater; so we had much to talk about over the years. I'll always remember her unflagging optimism, her terrific sense of humor and her genuine and deep concern for all who crossed her path. That's a darn good legacy when you consider that we never met or even spoke to each other, smile. May the memory of Cheryl's spirit bring peace and comfort to all whom she loved.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Take comfort in knowing that Cheryl is looking down upon all of you with love. It was an honour and a pleasure to work with Cheryl and it is still an honour to call her "my friend". She will be missed by us all.
