GWIN, Elsie (nee Firus)
Passed peacefully on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Delta View Habilitation Centre, in Delta, BC at the age of 86 years. Elsie will be remembered with love by her daughter Deborah Dibble (Mark), son Howard (Patti), son Ralph, sister Erna, and grandchildren Chad and Chelsea Dibble, Sophie and Emily Gwin, and Matthew and Katelyn Gwin. She was much loved and will be sadly missed by sisters-in-law Molly Firus and Terry Firus, nieces Carol Badgley (Dennis), Sharron Johnson (Blair), Janice Talbot (Gord), Karen Firus, Randi Firus (Tim), nephews Trevor Firus, Donald Nelson (Linda), Paul Firus, and Charlie Firus, great-nieces Suzan Badgley, Piper Badgley (Robb), and Courtney Johnson, and great-nephews Travis Johnson, Nelson Talbot, and Graham Talbot. Elsie was predeceased by her sister Hilda, brothers Arthur, Robert, and Eric, and daughter Laurie. Born November 24, 1925 in Herbert, Saskatchewan, Elsie ventured westward for post secondary education in Calgary and then onward to Vancouver where she settled and raised her family in suburban Burnaby. Renowned for her energy and enthusiasm, she was an active member and tireless volunteer over four decades with the United Church Woman of Cliff Avenue United Church. Elsie was for many years a passionate member of the NDP Party and gave generously of her time to many other community endeavors. She enjoyed a career in administration at the Oakalla Corrections Centre, building friendships that lasted into her retirement years. Always known as the life of the party, Elsie enjoyed organizing social gatherings, taking on new adventures, travel, reading, and cheering on her favourite teams. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Delta View Habilitation Centre and Seton Villa for their compassion and care over the years. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Elsie's life on Monday, November 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Cliff Avenue United Church, 1600 Cliff Avenue, Burnaby. A reception will follow at noon at Eagle Creek at Burnaby Mountain Golf Course, 7600 Halifax Street, Burnaby. A private family interment will be held afterwards at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3789 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
