GALSTER, Jan Edmund
June 19, 1939 - December 11, 2012
Jan died in Burnaby after a short battle with stomach cancer. He leaves behind wife of 44 years Lucy, son Robert, daughter-in-law Oonagh and grandchildren Caitlin, Thomas and Julia, sister Zofia; and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances scattered the world over and all united in grief for an honourable man.
Born in Warsaw, Poland he spent his national service as a paratrooper before embarking on a career on the high seas, eventually qualifying as a Master Mariner. In a daring - and ultimately successful - attempt to build a better life he defected in a risky midnight flight from his vessel along with his wife and young child in Churchill, Manitoba in 1979. The family settled in Vancouver where he later embarked on a land-based career as a Marine Surveyor on the Vancouver and surrounding area waterfront until his retirement in 2004.
A man of principle who thought things through before reaching a logical conclusion, his calming influence and wisdom is and will continue to be much-missed. Trzymaj sie, Ojciec. A private ceremony of remembrance will be held. No flowers please, with donations in lieu to BC Cancer Foundation gratefully acknowledged.
