Thomas Alfred Meikle December 10, 1926 - January 25, 2013 We have lost a good friend and beloved patriarch. Tom died peacefully, January 25, 2013. Born in Kitsilano in 1926, Tom was the first of the five children of Alfred Meikle and Elizabeth Winning Knox Meikle. His childhood was divided between North Burnaby and summers at Boundary Bay. After his service in the Canadian Army, he attended UBC. He taught English at Kitsilano High School and then moved to France where he was appointed principal of the Lycée International de Fontainebleau, the city where he met his wife, Suzanne. In 1962, they returned to Vancouver and he began teaching at Britannia. Upon completion of his Master's degree at the University of Washington, he returned to Vancouver City College and later became a founding English instructor at Langara.
The Guest Book is expired.
Tom's passion for sailing began with a flat-bottomed dinghy at Boundary Bay, he learned to love the coast as a porter on the CPR steamer Princess Adelaide, and he returned many times on boats of his own. He single-handed his 20-foot sloop around Vancouver Island, made many trips to Princess Louisa Inlet, and sailed to Haida Gwaii. He also sailed throughout Europe. After retirement Tom became the publisher of Pacific Rim magazine, and he and Suzanne travelled together widely and often.
Tom was a well-loved and generous uncle to Heather, Drew, Bruce, Margaret, Jamie, Alan, Billy, Lori, Andy, and Kimo Meikle, and Karen and Rona Blackwood. Tom is pre-deceased by his nephew Jamie and his brothers Jim and Don, Bill Blackwood, and survived by his wife Suzanne, brother Charlie and sister Margaret, and Maureen, Bunny, and Lois Meikle. His family would like to thank the extraordinary care given to Tom over many years by the staff of the Vancouver Dialysis Unit, and the staff at Crofton Manor. In lieu of flowers, donations to Langara College - Tom Meikle Scholarship (100 W. 49th Ave., Vancouver, V5Y 2Z6) would be appreciated. We will meet in Tom's honour at the Langara Golf Course Clubhouse on Saturday, February 9th from 2-5 pm.
