Bernice BALFOUR Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Apr. 5 to Apr. 7, 2013.
BALFOUR, Bernice
1923 - 2013
Surrounded by her loving family, Mom passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the age of 90. She was born in Victoria, BC and was predeceased by her sister Frances MacWilliam and her parents, Harold and Bernice Butteris. Mom was a graduate of Victoria High School and the University of Alberta, where she joined the Delta Gamma sorority. She moved to Vancouver in 1950 to work as a dietitian and married Charles B. Balfour in 1951. Mom is survived by her five children: Frances Corney (Mike), David Balfour (Linda), Laurie Atkinson, Donna Balfour and Patti Bacchus (Lee). She was also proud of her grandchildren: Sean, Patrick (Leah) and Robyn Corney; Andrew Balfour (Kim); Steven and Tim Atkinson; Alex Boylan; and Britta, Mary and Frank Bacchus. Her sister Fran's children survive her as well: Glen (Irene), Janice and Heather MacWilliam and their families. Mom was also predeceased by her companion Dr. Bill Taylor, with whom she shared several years of happiness. Mom was a loving and generous mother and grandmother and a beloved friend to many. She loved to cook and sew for others and was always ready to help those in need. She was a long-time member of the University Hill United Church congregation and found great comfort and belonging in its community. She belonged to the Kiwassa Club of Vancouver for many years and enjoyed the wonderful friendships she made among its members. A service of remembrance will be held on April 20, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the The Chapel of the Epiphany, 6030 Chancellor Boulevard (parking is extremely limited - we suggest parking in the Rose Garden Parkade, which is a five minute walk from the chapel). A reception will follow at Amica at Arbutus Manor, 2125 Eddington Drive, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.

Bernice was one of the finest souls I will ever know. The kindness she bestowed on my mother will never be forgotten nor will all the community service she provided with selfless grace to those in need. I was honoured when you were able to join us for our private wedding feast. You will be dearly missed by many but never forgotten. God bless your sweet soul.

I am grateful to have known Bernice through my Grandfather. I know he truly cherished her and we all appreciated how they looked out for each other. I will never forget her stories of getting her couch into her apartment and her little poodle April. Often my memories of Grandpa are linked with our visits with Bernice. Please accept my sincere condolences. Bernice's passing will leave a vast hole in the community, church and your family.
