MacLEAN, Robert "Bob" Duncan
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bob MacLean who was more commonly known to most as R. D. MacLean. Bob was born in Watrous, Saskatchewan on July 5, 1920 and on Sunday, April 14, 2013 he peacefully passed away in his sleep at his home in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 92 years. He relocated to Calgary from Edmonton in February 2013 to be closer to family. Bob was a Chemical Engineer who graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and some years later received his MBA from the University of Western Ontario. Bob was President and CEO of several companies throughout his career, starting with Lake Ontario Cement in Toronto, Ontario. Also, he was honoured and privileged to be President and CEO of the Portland Cement Association out of Chicago, Illinois. It was during that time that R.D. MacLean was often referred to as Mr. Cement. After years of dedication in Chicago, Bob returned back to Canada where he continued his career with Genstar Cement, now known as Inland and Ocean Cement. He remained with Inland Cement at the Edmonton Head Office until his retirement in 1985. Upon retirement Bob's adventurous nature continued: he began flying and became the owner of a Cesena 172 and subsequently served on the Board of Directors for the Edmonton Flying Club and several others Boards. His love of swimming, downhill skiing and golfing kept him young and healthy until very recently. Bob is predeceased by his first wife of 46 years, Iva Mae Houghton. Bob remarried his first wife's nearest and dearest friend Jean Hunter Ryan. Bob and Jean were happily married for 18 years. He is survived by his wife Jean and his children Heather (Gary), James (Beverly); his grandchildren Robert, Amy, Michael, and Tyler; his stepchildren Greg (Michele), Deborah (Bruce), Tim (Jennifer) and step-grandchildren Megan, Laura, Luke, Braden and Adam. Bob also leaves behind cousins, nieces, nephews and other family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Society of Calgary 201, 222 - 58 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2S3. Bob's family would like to send a special thanks to his caregivers for the past two years. Your kindness made his journey memorable. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website
