It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Russell Small. He is survived by his partner, Angela Simpson, his mother Norine Small, three sisters, Sharon (Rick) Baker, Mary Jo (Garry) Lay, Nancy Small and two brothers, Bill (Heather) Small and Tom Small. He will also be missed by 6 nephews, 4 nieces, 2 great-nephews and 4 great-nieces. Dan was predeceased by his father, Edward Woods Small. Born in St. Thomas, Ontario, Dan attended school in St. Thomas and London, Ontario. His career as a musician spanned provinces and decades. A move to Vancouver led to acquiring his first homebrew supply store, The U-Brew Shoppe, on Commercial Drive in 1991. Three relocations later, he remained the sole proprietor of Dan's Homebrewing Supplies at 835 East Hastings Street until his passing. Over the years, Dan shepherded many novice homebrewers and touched many lives. He was the common thread between newcomers, seasoned brewers, industry professionals and recent immigrants aspiring to replicate beverages from home. Dan's kind generosity, expertise and matter-of-fact manner will be dearly missed. In lieu of funeral services, there will be a memorial gathering for family members and close friends on Sunday afternoon, August 4th at Dan's home. On Monday, August 5th, there will be an all-day (12pm-12am) open house event for customers and friends at Dan's Homebrewing Supplies, 835 E. Hastings, and at Tom's Eastvin Winemaking, 825 E. Hastings. A musical tribute of Dan's life is to take place at the Wise Hall in the near future with details to be announced.
