Milana CHRISTIE Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jan. 20, 2014.
CHRISTIE, Milana
IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER
Born March 17, 1962, in Tuzla, Croatia passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family on January 11, 2014 in Vancouver, BC. She is lovingly remembered by her mother Edith, father Slavko, brother Zoran and his wife Maria and her nephews Joshua and Luke, her extended family and countless good friends and colleagues. Milana moved to Vancouver from Toronto in 1994 to enjoy a lifestyle filled with many of the cultural events the city had to offer. She spent most of her working career with the Vancouver School Board as educator and principal where she shared countless laughs and great experiences with many people who came to be very good long term friends. She was an amazing aunt to Josh and Luke and enjoyed spending time with them on their visits to Vancouver. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sharing books with the "ladies who read". Her positive attitude, sense of humour and enjoyment of life, were highlights for all of us that had the pleasure of knowing her. A Celebration of Milana's life will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 7:00 pm at the Croatian Cultural Centre, 3250 Commercial Drive in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Breast Cancer Society. Condolences may be offered at

We will always remember Ms. Christie as a dedicated and hard-working principal, who loved the kids so very much. Additionally she is most likely the kindest person, with the biggest heart, that we have ever known. You have earned your place with the angels, Ms. Christie, may you rest in peace.

I was a colleague and friend of Milana's during her Toronto working years. We kept in touch even after her move to Vancouver, and met with her during Toronto visits (the "Circle"... Sophia, Marian, and Elizabeth). We knew she was giving her illness a valiant fight. Hearing of her passing recently was a very difficult thing. Her enjoyment of her family, friends and career.......her sense of humour and positive nature will always be remembered and cherished. From circle friend, Elizabeth

I really love and miss you aunt Milana. My heart aches still but I know you would want me to be strong and it was honestly an honor to call you my aunt. You taught me to never give up and to pursue what I love. Thank you for a lifetime of memories. I love you and I hope our paths meet again some day.

When I was visiting schools to find the right one for my son, who has special needs, I met several excellent principals, but Milana stood out from the rest. I watched her kind, easy, meaningful interactions with her students and staff and knew we had found the perfect school.

My son loved her too. Every morning she greeted the kids at the door, and he would ask, “Ms. Christie, are you doing the announcements today? Your voice is so beautiful. It's always the best when you do the announcements.”

Last fall, he told me that Ms. Christie had come to visit and that he had helped her with using her wheelchair. I cried both because I knew this meant that Milana was facing such difficult challenges and because I was overcome again by what an extraordinary, talented and committed teacher she was. In the midst of her own illness, she made the time to visit the children who loved her so dearly, teaching them by example that a life that includes illness or disability is still a life to be lived with love and joy and courage.

She left the world a better place through her courage, kindness and dedication.

Although now retired, I remember Milanna as a new "bright light" to the leadership role in the Vancouver system. She was thoughtful and calm yet funny and bright. I watched her career with interest and know that she will be sadly missed by all those she touched.

Milana's kind spirit and dedication to her students inspired me to be a better educator. I will always remember the lessons I learned from her when I had the privilege of working with her during my Vancouver School Board days.

Milana,it was an honor to be able to call you a friend. I will never forget our happy, laughter-filled times at Jamieson. I'm so glad we kept in touch afterwards, enjoying our "Klump" get-togethers. We've lost a very special person, but our lives are better for having known you. I will miss you so.

I had the immense pleasure of working with Milana at Jameison School for 2 years. Her warmth, her humour, her ability to deal with all situations, and her calm collected manner, made it absolute delight to work with her. She was pure joy and I feel priveledged to have known her. Sending healing thoughts from Switzerland to the family, friends, former colleagues and students of the lovely Milana Christie. I enjoyed working with Milana at the very beginning of my teaching career in Vancouver. Even more fun than that was socializing with her in the late 90's until I departed for a life abroad. I will always remember her smile and her gentle spirit.
