Frederick LATREMOUILLE Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Mar. 7 to Mar. 8, 2015.
LATREMOUILLE, Frederick Bruce
October 22, 1945 - March 5, 2015
After a brief illness, Fred passed away peacefully at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, his wife Cathy by his side. Fred was known in Vancouver as a multi-talented Radio and Television broadcaster as well as a highly sought after commercial writer and actor. He won several awards for his advertising genius, has a star on B.C.'s Walk of Fame, and a place in the Canadian Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Most people will remember Fred for his popular radio show "Latremornings". Some of the highlights include the groundbreaking "Wake Up Calls" and "Wake Up" trips that gave many listeners an opportunity to travel with the Latremorning team. Fred's wit and humour were unparalleled. His ability to turn an ordinary event into an hilarious recounting was a priceless gift. Fred seemed to succeed at whatever he embarked upon, whether it was golf, tennis, running, drumming, chess or blackjack. Fred and Cathy met on the radio, and enjoyed 35 years together. Having the good fortune to retire early and spend winters in sunny climes. It is a terrible loss for his family and his many many friends, and he would include his audience in that club. He was a true original. Left to grieve are Cathy, Fred's mother Margaret Harlow, stepfather Robert Harlow, sisters Genevieve, Kathleen and Tracye, step-sister Gretchen, brothers Andrew, Kelly and Bill, and his many nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Wayne Cox for being such a dear friend to Fred and Cathy and helping them through this difficult time. Thank you to all the friends and family who have been so very loving and supportive.

I do hope those close to Fred again post their memories of years past knowing Fred. So many commented after his passing in 2015. One person, Ken Turnbull, mentioned being a school friend of many years previous. IF this is the same Ken Turnbull who became an anesthetist (now retired), I have no doubt these two were always being disciplined for being 'clowns' or making everyone in a class laugh when the teacher would be trying to have the students pay attention. I worked as a nurse and over decades in working in a Recovery Room, knew Ken at work. He'd arrive in the recovery room and share his sense of humour, which was also Fred's - jokes, laughter never ending. No wonder the two were great friends over decades. It's a great way to have this legacy of a life; being known for creating laughter. With Fred's radio show on KISS FM, I'd be getting ready for work and laughing as I did. As not a 'morning person' at all, to be up at 6 am, turning on the radio and listening to Fred's chuckle at yet another funny anecdote, I'd be laughing along with him by 6:10 am. What a great way to begin a day. When he and Cathy ended their on-air shows, I missed it for years and never did listen to morning radio again. I do hope Cathy and also Wayne Cox are aware of this chance to share memories of Fred on this date and enjoy reading them. God Bless Fred's life and his spirit. It was a blessing to know him as I did.

Used to hear Fred on CFUN all the time while I lived and worked in Vancouver. He was quite in the groove so to speak with Rock & Roll. Rest in Peace Fred.

Was the best influence in my life growing up as a teenager with my transistor with me at all times.
Fred was a great MC at many venues. Went to them all, and the dances all well.
I miss his wit and sense of humour.
Fred will always have a special place in my ❤ heart.
Cathy and Fred were the best for each other. I still feel for Cathy missing her love of her life.
But Cathy knows Fred is with her at all times guiding and watching over her with love

I just have to add that I came to Vancouver in 1995 (from Trannna) and I enjoyed them amazingly on the drive to work. Few radio shows were as entertaining. They were indeed a fixture of the Vancouver scene. Even after they retired, they still held sway with local celebrities from the Maui condo. Then on to Arizona. Fred lived large and deserved to die the same way. Thanks to Red Robinson for enabling me to express my regrets after so many months. Love Keith

Too often now, I hear of, or read of, another of our childhood friends passing. Fred was unique and although we did not see each other much after high school we remained friends and I was always greeted like it was last week.
Could not believe it when he told the Hermit name Dave limerick on the air.
Hope you got a great gig in the sky buddy.
My condolences Cathy.

Fred, I first met Fred like just about everyone else, on the radio. Later on we became personal friends and especially as he became active on FB. Fred always had a gracious comment and spent hours reading each and every comment and replying to questions. What a great man, what a great life!

March 25, 2015

So sorry to hear about Fred. Enjoyed him and Cathy on the air in Vancouver. My best memory is when he was having his wisdom teeth removed and I called in and said "no problem, I had mine out in the afternoon and went dinner than evening". I saw him at the CKSS Christmas Breakfast at the Pan Pacific a couple of weeks later and talked to him and he said his experience was not as good as mine. He talked like we were old friends. That stuck with me, friendly and personable. My condolences to Cathy and the family. I will miss him.

Sorry to hear the passing of Fred. Used to watch Let's Go for our Canadian voices. It was a treasure. Would of enjoyed reading what some of the co-hosts are doing these days.

Many fond and funny memories came flooding back when I heard of Fred's passing - far too soon. As a teenager, Fred's emerging sense of humour kept our friendship far from dull. As we co-hosted Let's Go together, Fred was professional beyond his years and amazed me that he could be so darn good in front of a camera. Just a born performer. We discovered much about the grown-up world while still teenagers and Fred went running ahead at full speed. Funny, sensitive, encouraging, loyal, vulnerable but courageous, I'm so glad to have known this dear friend.

I was so saddened to learn of Fred's passing recently. He was a fellow West Vancouverite, and I was always a big fan of his during his early radio & early TV shows, and while I was growing up. He always produced solid entertaining shows, that showed his affable, easy going personality. I remember him doing early live remote's at Park Royal for T-Kay Jeans. Later on he and Cathy Balduzzi made a great team on air, and in person. The talents Fred shared with his listeners and friends, definitely have made for many happy memories. My Father who had also been in Radio for several years, said he used to see more of him when they were both in Hawaii, than he did when in Vancouver. My sincere condolences to Cathy, his extended family, and all who will miss him!

As a young teen struggling to stay awake while babysitting I often called Fred late at night for someone to talk to. He was always so patient and understanding, playing new release records on the air then coming back on line to ask if I thought the song would be a hit or not. I'm sure he had better things to do with his time but he was kind enough to keep me company on some of those long and tiresome nights. I appreciated the time he took, his treating me like my opinion mattered, and his kindness. Thanks Fred for being there.

Fred made me feel part of the CKVN/C-FUN team when I came aboard as a 20-year old (and CHUM West made me change my name to Michael Taylor). I was a Nanaimo kid like him, so he could relate. I was now among some of the biggest personalities and talents in the radio industry, but in my three years there it was Fred who brought that everyman vibe to the station. He left a lasting and positive impression on me and countless others. My heartfelt sympathy to Kathy and the Latremouille family.

Fred and I were neighbours in West Van when we were kids in the late 1950s, but I had no idea at the time that he possessed such talent. We both got into the radio biz in the early 60s - me thanks to Fred and his step-dad, Bob Harlow - and he absolutely took off. Fred was like Johnny Carson - he made it all look so easy. And he was nice to everybody. Huge talent - tiny ego. We never worked together but crossed paths often and always recalled the carefree days of our youth in West Van. Great memories. RIP, Fred. It was truly an honour to know you.

March 12, 2015

Fred was the king of the airwaves and we will never forget him. He helped put us in a happy mood while fighting the traffic on our way into work every morning, and his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor and timing set the tone for all of us as we started off our daily routines. If any of us ever want to put a smile on our faces, all we need do is think of Fred's voice and some of the wonderfully funny things he used to come out with. He will always be around as we will always keep his memory alive in our hearts. My deepest condolences to his Partner, Cathy and the rest of Fred's Family. If there's a Rock 'N Roll Heaven, they've now got the best DJ ever!

I met Fred many years ago on the set of "Let's Go". I found him funny and easy to talk to. He became a friend on Facebook and every day he managed to put a smile on my face with his wit and humour. He was one of a kind that's for sure and will be missed by so many.

I was Producer-Scriptwriter for the CFL's Miss Grey Pageants in Vancouver
in 1983, '86, '87 and '90. The respective MC's I selected were, in order, Fred Latremouille, Jackson Davies, Stirling Faux and Peter Legge. Fitting that our Freddie led such an all-star quartet. Best to Cathy and Family.

March 11, 2015

Fred and I spent a good deal of time together over the years...I first met Fred when I was doing the overnight show on CFUN and Fred was doing mornings. I could write a few chapters from that era, we certainly had fun and shared a lot of stories. Then there was a longer period where Fred was doing mornings and I followed Fred and Cathy doing middays. I was also APD which meant I was busy setting up special broadcasts with Fred and Cathy like the original Christmas Wish broadcast from the Pan Pacific Hotel. We were a tight bunch, I remember phoning the studio shortly after our daughter Alex was born (27 years ago)and Nelson Millman answered and then Fred and Cathy got on the line and we celebrated like we were family. In many ways we were family, and that's what makes it difficult to process that Freddie is gone. Grace and blessings to Cathy and may we all smile with the brightest smile that any of us had the great fortune to have met Fred Latremouille!

Fred brightened the morning, no matter the weather. Only he had us laughing out loud at that hour of the day, enjoying the "victims" of his Wake Up calls. And our favourite was when I wrote about Bruce's big fish, and it reached glory on two of Fred's casettes," The best of Latrimouille, "The Stuffed Fish" and this last Sunday morning, we once again advanced his SONY Latremornings Dream Machine, the clock Bruce won for being so gullible. Love the well-deserved tributes filling this Guest Book. As Bob Hope said, "Thanks for the Memories". Dale and Bruce Anderson

I can sincerely say that Fred is my favorite DJ of all time. I followed him from CFUN to 96.9Kiss FM, and when I heard him and Cathy were on Clear FM, I tuned in as well. When he worked at 96.9, I would call in and won prizes so often that he began to recognize my voice/name. He was a fast thinker with a sharp wit and left an indelible impression on Vancouver radio.

March 9, 2015

My sincere condolences go out to Cathy and the Latremouille family. Having grown up in Van(and going to Kits High when Fred did) it was great listening to Fred on the radio. I remember when Fred and Cathy came back to radio from their home it was so good to hear them again and their banter. I remember fondly going on the trip to the Empress Hotel in Victoria with Fred and Cathy. My sister had won the trip and I got to enjoy it with her. Fred, you will be so missed. You enlightened so many lives. Thank you.

The diamond J dude ranch is where my sister Lindy met Fred. When he visited his Grandmother at the Delta hospital, where I worked I mentioned the Diamond J. His eyes lit up and he told me he had a crush on a girl named Lindy. My sister passed away seven years ago. Remember to keep on the Sunnyside or we'll drive you all insane. Fred knows the song.

So shocked to hear about Fred. He was one of the constants in my youth. I recall going to all of the CFUN-sponsored events. The band Chilliwack were The C-Fun Classics back then. Fred once split a burger with me in the basement coffee shop of the Bay, after a CFUN event, back in the day. I was walking on air for MONTHS! I recall giving him a mug that said "Fred" backstage at the Dave Clark Five concert. This was before such a thing as personalized mugs were common. He mentioned using in on the air one afternoon. Fred, you are SO MUCH a part of Vancouver's radio and music scene and always will be. Also condolences to his brother, Drew, who I knew in the early 70's as well.

We grew up listening to Fred on the radio, and finally Fred & Cathy on Clear FM. I remember calling in a song request one morning. My husband had broken his neck, and was a bit down. I asked Cathy if they could play our wedding song, "What a wonderful world by Louis Armstrong". Just before it played, Fred makes the comment...I'm not sure about this...The guy breaks his neck, and his wife wants us to play "What a wonderful world" ? It was priceless...

I remember Fred listening to CFUN during my childhood and later on KISS FM . Enjoyed his cheerful personality and one of his crazy TV commercials with his wife Cathy whom I also recall hearing her while appearing with Fred on the radio. As others had said he was a true legend of radio. Fred was gone too soon and still young too. Thanks for the memories of radio listening I never knew or met Fred personally but as I am typing this entry I am feeling emotional and tearing up. I would like to say that Fred was the Wolfman jack of BC and Canada as to describe his enormous radio popularity as well as him being a true radio legend. Thanks for the memories of radio and my condolences to Cathy and the rest of the Latremouille/Baldazi family. You will be missed. Maybe now that Fred's in heaven he can now DJ some tunes to his new.listeners there too

Condolensces to Cathy and family on Fred's passing. I so enjoyed his radio show in the 60's as a teenager. And of course, the Fred and Cathy show later on. I will never forget that day one summer when he turned up at Central Park Pool in swim suit for a swim. He was a great guy but also certainly made it clear he was also just a regular guy. I think he loved his audience over the years, young and old alike as much as we loved him. Blessing to you all as you grieve his passing and may he rest in peace.

Facebook is crowded with people who were not only his Facebook friends, but his friends in the real world. It didn't seem to matter to Fred. He let us know when he was hurting, and we hurt with him. He described the good days and we were happy for him. It was heart breaking to learn of Fred's passing. He will be deeply missed. One of my favourite recollections, is laughing so hard with Fred & John McComb, in the record library, that tears flowed! I think he could spin stories almost better than records! But wait, beyond my experience, there are countless, wonderful, joyful, memories he has left behind for so many others. It is staggering to think of how many lives he touched so beautifully & lovingly. Surely, there can be no better testament for "a life well lived & loved". My sincere, heartfelt, sympathy goes out to his beloved wife, Cathy, his family & friends. RIP Fred. I will always feel immensely proud to call you my friend.

My deepest condolences to you Cathy and Fred's family and his countless friends. Fred was such a big part of my life. I grew up with him - we went to the same school. When he was on the radio in the 60's I don't think he has any idea how many teenage heartbreaks he helped me through!!! and then Letremornings - Fred & Cathy..so many memories. you will be missed. Gone too soon Thanks for the memories Fred..Laura

My most sincere condolences to Cathy and all of Fred's family at this time. Such a great loss for the large Vancouver "family" as a whole. His fabulous sense of humour and personality will be missed. RIP Fred, and know how very loved you were by so many. xoxo

The earth sighed deeply with the passing of Fred.
When Fred hit the airwaves, the bar for others to follow had been elevated so high that few have managed to reach it and yet Fred reached out wih his kind spirit to encourage all to run as fast as he could in whatever challenge lie ahead.
No other Radio team of Fred & Cathy in the mornings ever achieved so much.
We all became aware of our world much more with his on-air gift and talent.
RIP Fred.
Regards,

Carol Mills
