SLADEN, Dr. Joseph Gilbert MD, FRCS(C)
December 17, 1929 - April 15, 2016
Our wonderful brother, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully from cancer on April 15, 2016, surrounded by family. He is survived by his sister Kathleen Gow, daughter Sarah (Crosland Doak), son Patrick (Anne Grant) and grandchildren Gilbert (Sladen), Lauren (Doak), and Fraser (Doak). Joe was predeceased by his loving wife Jill (2010) and son Rob (1983). Joseph was born to Gilbert & Kathleen Sladen in Toronto on December 17, 1929. He attended Baron Renfrew Public School and Upper Canada College. After graduating from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine in 1954, he headed west in a car he and a friend constructed out of fiberglass. Interrupted by authorities for driving an impressive but incomplete vehicle, undeterred he persevered to residency at Shaughnessy Hospital (Vancouver) followed by a Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at St. Mary's Hospital (London, England). His career as an accomplished teacher (Professor Emeritus, UBC), and an innovative and compassionate surgeon at St. Paul's Hospital (Vancouver) spanned over 40 years, retiring in 1998. During his tenure at St. Paul's he was the long-time Head of the Division of Vascular Surgery and was the President of both the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery and the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery in the US. Joe's skill and creativity as a surgeon crossed over to his private life as a passionate and conservation- minded fisherman. He was an active member of the Totem Flyfishers and Steelhead Society since the late 1960s. In the early 1960s Joe saw the promise in a west coast ski resort (Whistler), investing both in shares of the Garibaldi Lift Company and buying a ski chalet for his family. Skiing last in 2015, his fervency for the sport was contagious. As with medicine, Joe was always willing to share his knowledge, technique and equipment with a fellow angler or skier. His love for the mountains, rivers and lakes of BC, surpassed only by his love for his family, was an inspiration to many, and lives on in our hearts. Joe and Jill's faith, as members of St. Mary's Kerrisdale Anglican Church led them through a dedicated life of giving and receiving support in the many challenges that they, friends and even strangers encountered along their journey. Our sincere thanks to the doctors and entire staff at the BC Cancer Institute and at St. John Hospice. A celebration of Joe's life will be held at St. Mary's Kerrisdale (2490 West 37th at Larch St.) Vancouver at 3 pm on Monday April 25th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the ALS Society of Canada or to a charity of your choosing.
