Van Horn, Larry - Ventura
Larry Van Horn Ventura, CA Larry Van Horn passed away unexpectedly on August 2nd 2016 at his home in Ventura, California. Larry was born in the spring of 1937 to Homer and Vera in San Pedro, California. He was the second oldest of four siblings. Larry spent his formative years in rural Oregon, enlisting in the Navy in his late teens. After dutifully serving his country, he began his life long career as an industrial painter. His career took him all over the country and the planet, traveling to distant locals such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, the Arctic Sea, and Hawaii. Never one to sit idle even in retirement he went back to work for the city of Oxnard in his early sixties. He was an avid outdoors-man, with a waste not want not mentality. He had a particular fondness for sport fishing and enjoyed numerous trips with friends and family members in the local waters well into his late 70's. He cared deeply for his family and enjoyed spending time with them. We will miss this hard working and honorable man; but we are thankful for the time we spent together. Larry is survived by his wife and best friend of 53 years Billie; His older sister Barbra (Don) Croy, His younger brothers Dennis (LaDonna) and Ronald (Kay) Rankin. His children Brenda Kilgore, Joan (Mark) Cantrell, Gary Van Horn and Jerry Bailey. His grandchildren Shantale (Steve) Ornelas, Melissa (Erick) Zander, Bazel (Kristy) Bowen, Brittany Baker, Adam (Stacy), Crystal, and Tim (Brooke). This is in addition to 10 great grandchildren. In place of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. There will be an informal memorial service at Trinity Lutheran Church (196 N. Ashwood Ventura, 93003) on Saturday, August 27th beginning at eleven AM.

Villa, Oscar B. - Santa Paula
Oscar B. Villa Santa Paula, CA Oscar B. Villa, 82, was with family, when he passed away August 13th, 2016 from complications due to cancer. Married for 59 years, as of August 10th, to Mercedes E. Sanchez, Oscar was a beloved husband, dad, grandpa, soon-to-be great grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend. Born December 4th, 1933 to Antonia Ramirez and Joe Villa, Oscar grew up the only son and baby of the family. His father often took him fishing and hunting in the hills of Ventura County. It was on those trips that he learned patience and a love for the outdoors. He later shared both with his children and grandchildren on summer fishing trips. Oscar was an alumnus of Santa Paula High School ('52) where he ran track, played basketball and football. He joined the Air Force and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant, while working as a Combination Welder. He was honorably discharged in 1956. Later, he worked at Camarillo State Hospital as a Psychiatric Technician 1, for 27 years. Oscar retired from Surface Targets Pacific Missile Test Center in Port Hueneme in 1998 where he worked for 11 years as an Electronic Technician. Oscar was a suspender wearing, Ricola toting, handkerchief hording, popcorn popping man with a laugh that easily escalated to a full bodied, eye watering, and breathless hiss with the power of his own humorous imagination. He had a wealth of knowledge and always took the time to share it. He made sure your shoes fit properly; that you kept one eye up and one eye down in search of spare change; that you had a jacket, just in case; and that the car always had extra water bottles for your journey. Oscar put other's needs before his and for all these reasons and more, he will be greatly missed. Oscar was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Elinor Aparicio, Armida de Flores, and Rachel Villa; and his two infant children, Oscar Jr. and Heidi Ann. Oscar leaves behind his wife, Mercy; son, Ben Villa and his wife, Teresa; daughter, Christina Martinez-Atilano and her partner, Carlton Allen; granddaughters, Sara Martinez-Davis and her husband, Jeff Davis of St. Louis, MO, Sabrina Martinez, and Ashley Villa; grandsons, Joey Villa and fianc?e, Bianca Alvarez, and Samuel Atilano; brothers-in-law, Sal Aparicio, and Charlie Sanchez (wife, Alison); sister-in-law, Andrea Morales; and beloved nieces and nephews of various greats. The family would like to thank Dr. Hema Nathan for her years of care and friendship, the wonderful team at Buena Vista Hospice, and Oscar's two caregivers who shared their love and skill with not only Oscar, but his family, too. Oscar's life will be celebrated Sunday, September 4th from 1-4pm. Family and friends wishing to celebrate are asked to please RSVP with Chris at (805) 844-1731 by September 1st.
