Hanawalt, Marceline Kich - La Verne
Sept 4, 1928 - Jan 14, 2015 Born in a rural area of northeastern Indiana, near Columbia City, Marceline attended a one-room school in early years and graduated as Valedictorian of her eleven student high school graduating class. She attended Manchester College and received her MA in Education from Indiana University. She taught in Indiana for 5 years before moving to Ventura, CA for a better climate and higher salary. She was married and divorced attorney Richard Hanawalt. She had no children. She was a Miller-Unruh Read specialist in elementary grades and taught for over 39 years before retiring. At the age of 69, after much research, she moved to Hillcrest Homes, a continuing care retirement community in La Verne, CA. During her 18 years at Hillcrest, Marceline continued her interest in growing flowers on campus. She helped with maintaining Hillcrest's residential archives, writing and delivering the monthly newsletter, and visiting with residents in assisted living and the nursing facility. Marceline took it upon herself to visit and welcome all new residents of Hillcrest. She enjoyed getting to know each and every resident. While volunteering her gardening skills, she met resident Joseph Hess, whose wife had advanced dementia. Their friendship developed into more and they married after the death of his wife. She accompanied Joe at many Korean War and Disabled Veteran association gatherings. They were very happy and enjoyed many travels in their two year marriage before her untimely death, attributed to the insertion of a stent in an aorta, a routine procedure. Joseph's children and family grew to love and admire Marceline for her humbleness, how genuine she was, her work ethic, and how much she and Joseph loved and looked out for each other. There will be a gathering to celebrate Marceline's life on Friday, January 30th at Hillcrest Retirement Home, 2705 Mountain View Dr., La Verne, CA, 1:00-3:00pm in the Maury Smeltzer Lounge with light refreshments.
