Ralph Alamillo Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Ralph Alamillo announces his passing on July 8, 2010.

Ralph was born February 15, 1923 in Stockton, CA the first son of Jesus and Ruth Alamillo. Born into a family that spoke Spanish, Ralph recognized on his first day of school that to succeed he would need to speak English. He studied hard and surrounded himself with friends that helped him learn the language. By the second grade Ralph was fluent in two languages. Through his school years he studied Latin and French.

Words meant something to Ralph and during his lifetime he used them for support, comfort and encouragement to the thousands of people he met.

Ralph attended Lafayette and Lincoln Elementary, Stockton High, BA from University California Santa Barbara and a MA from USC. During Ralph's first year in junior college, Ralph landed on Omaha Beach D-Day plus four. He moved quickly through France and his regiment united with the English army going into Northern Germany where they eventually bivouacked at Chateau Hamel in Tongeren Belgium. While in the Army Ralph participated in any events including the liberation of a concentration camp.

In 1951 he was hired by the Pleasant Valley School District and taught his first four years in Camarillo. Ralph was an educator for 42 years eventually returning to the PVSD as Assistant Superintendent in 1964. In 1974 he returned to the site level as a principal. Ralph earned many accolades including serving on the Juvenile Justice Commission, being a charter member of the Association of California School Administrators and the 1978 Secondary School Administrator of the Year. Although a true professional his greatest gift was his rapport with kids. He loved spending the last of his career with children.

Ralph is a Lion and has belonged to the Pleasant Valley Lions Club for 55 years. Ralph was awarded a Life Member and was a proud recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship for Humanitarian Service. In any service club or community organization there is always one person who will do without being asked, Ralph was that person. Aside from being a Camarillo Don he was also Camarillo Man of the year in 1992. He served with the founders of the city and considered them friends. Ralph enjoyed ushering at St. Mary Magdalen church, working with the Friends of the Library, Boys and Girls Club and any individual or group that needed a few minutes or a few days.

Ralph's retirement had no wasted minutes. He was a starter at River Ridge Golf course and loved greeting each group. Ralph went to the gym most mornings and several times during the week had coffee with his pals Joe and Fred along with the Camarillo "Senate".

During the football season you could find Ralph cheering for USC. Ralph's greatest joy was his grand children. His son Mark's kids, Eric and Steven are accomplished sailors, musicians and Lacrosse players. You could find Ralph at Roadrunner and Cougar games and then at Rio Mesa watching his son John and Denise's boys, Jack and Joe, play football or watching Ally dance or just play the flute. He spent many hours with Alicia and Jeremy Laurentowski's children, Jacob and Jenna and loved watching them play soccer, basketball and dancing. His grand kids loved him and after a day with Pap/Grandpa the kids would need a nap. Ralph also enjoyed his philosophical discussions with his step son Jeff Magill.

Ralph spent the last 25 years married to Vera. During their time they loved to travel seeing many countries and spending great times with their friends.

A funeral mass will be held in Ralph's honor Friday July 16th, 2 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Camarillo corner of Crestview Drive and Las Posas Road.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Camarillo Friends of the Library 4101 Las Posas Rd, Camarillo, CA 93010.

Dear Vera and Family,

Tony and I were so saddened to hear of Ralph's passing! Jerry Hegarty sent me the clipping, or I wouldn't have known, as we are at our Washington State house right now. We first met Ralph when he was in charge of the Mentally Gifted Minors Program, which our son was a part of. We were immediately impressed with him. He was principal when some of our sons were at Los Altos. We came to be so fond of him through the years, and we know what a great loss it is to your family and to the community. Please give our condolences to the rest of your family, also.

We are sorry to hear about Ralph's passing. We knew him as a principal to some of our children, as a friend and as a fellow Lion Club member. His memory will be carried with us into the future. He left a great legacy to many and we are blessed to call him a friend.

Dear Alamillo Family, I am so glad that I went over there for the service for Uncle Ralph. I was important to me to be there in his honor. He was very dear to me, as I know he was to all of you. We all know he is in a better place now joining his siblings. That does not mean we will not miss him, We all hurt in our own personal way in his lost. I will love him forever and never forget him.

To the Alamillo Family, Ralph was a wonderful person who had a big heart. He was my principal at Los Altos Intermediate School and he thoroughly enjoyed interacting and guiding young junior high students. In later years Ralph always greeted me with that ever present smile and big hug. Vera, it was my pleasure to teach Alicia and Jeff and to know you as a parent and fellow teacher. We are living 8,000 miles away but heard of Ralph's passing through an acquaintance. We had the opportunity of working with Ralph in the PVSD for many years. Ralph was always upbeat and had a wonderful gift of being able connect instantly with the children. During lunch time you could always find him out with the kids where the action was... be it elementary or middle school. He was a positive force for good in Camarillo. We send our sympathies to his family and loved ones. He will be missed!

Alamillo Family, I am so sorry to hear of Ralph's passing. He was a very nice man who was always very outgoing person. I invited him along with other teachers to attend our ACHS 40th reunion. Ralph showed up and had a great time as well as my classmates seeing him again. I would always see and talk to him at L.A. Workout. He was full of energy and life. NO one could guess his age as he always looked 20 years younger than his actual age. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during these tough times.

Wonderful man, memorable educator, kind and thoughtful human being! May his family know the peace that comes with celebrating a life well lived.

July 15, 2010

Mr. Alamillo was my principal throughout grade school at Valle Lindo. He was always so caring and concerned and always had a smile on his face. Running into him later in life he always remembered my name and gave me a big hug. I had the pleasure of introducing my children to him and running into him at the gym or coffee shop on occasion. He was a dedicated man to say the least. He will never be forgotten.

Dear Alamillo Family,

Principal Alamillo was a wonderful soul who embodied all the attributes of a "Teacher of Education and Teacher of Life". He was and always will be a very important part of the History of Camarillo. He will live on in the memory of the families he guided through education with patience, kidness and love.
My deepest condolences to your family. He will be missed by all the Community.

Please accept my deepest condolences to your family. Mr. Alamillo gave me my first job while a senior in high school in 1963. I went to school half-day and was a playground aide at Oceanview school. He was instrumental in my deciding to become a teacher. I have been retired for some time but I continue to teach. He will remain my most honored mentor.

Dear Vera & Family
I am truly sorry to read about your loss. Actually it is a big loss for Camarillo. My family has know Ralph for over 30 years and we have always enjoyed every encounter. He was the twins Principal for entire 6 years at Las Posas school and then he was in the Lions with my dad, Morris Parks and I worked with him at the school district also.
He was always calm and a willing listener.
