Delia Worthington Obituary

Delia Mary Worthington, 55, a truly spiritual child of God, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 after a courageous long-term battle with brain cancer.

Delia was born June 14, 1955 in Port Jefferson, N.Y. Being a New York native, Delia graduated from Mercy High School (1973) and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from Hartwick College (1977). Her great desire was to become a registered nurse and she completed her R.N. degree at University of St. Petersburg where she graduated Suma Cum Laude.

Having transitioned to Ventura County, Delia achieved her goal working as a Registered Nurse at St. Johns Pleasant Valley Hospital (extended care unit), then at the Department of Neuroscience at St. Johns Regional Medical Center. Her dedication to her patients culminated in 2005 when she accepted the position of School Nurse at Rio Mesa High School. Her passion for serving the medical needs of so many students provided her greatest joy and she was loved and respected by staff and students alike.

Delia will be most remembered for her personal beauty, sense of humor, dedication to family and patients as well as her unconditional love for her fellow man. Many have mentioned that to meet her was to experience something very special. The light from her eyes and radiant smile would warm the hearts of all. Delia's professional dedication and compassion were loved and respected by those who were blessed to be a part of her life. Delia leaves behind a legacy of love for family and friends, each of whom is greatly diminished by her passing.

Delia is preceded in death by her father, Martin G. Ahearn.

She is survived by her loving husband, Steve Worthington; son, Donald Schultz; mother, Mary Ahearn; brother, Joe Ahearn; nephews, Marty and A.J. Ahearn; stepchildren, Chris and Shannon Worthington; as well as grandchildren, Tyler and Devon Worthington.

A celebration of Delia's life will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 13 at Padre Serra Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, Delia has requested that donations be made to either St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital or St. Johns Pleasant Valley Hospital.

There are few people in this world that we encounter that touch our lives the way that Delia has touched mine. The light - the radiance - that shone from within her certainly was not of this world. I am blessed to have had her as a sister.

A wise man once told me that relationships do not end when a person passes, that they merely change. Mary, Donnie, Steve and family - you are in my prayers.

God bless,

Steve and family,
I am so incredibly saddened by the news of Delia passing. My thoughts, prayers, and condolences are with you at this most difficult time. Delia was an unbelievably strong, courageous, beautiful woman both inside and out. I feel so very blessed that I knew her and just wish I got a chance to tell her what a life-long impression she made on my heart. Delias presence was just amazing...her smile lit up the whole room; her eyes, welcoming and warm. I will never forget how courageous she was throughout her battle; no matter how she felt internally, she always had the most beautiful smile on her face. She always kept her head held high and never gave up hope. She showed me what faith and trust in the Lord is all about and for that, I will never forget her.

Dear Steve, I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
I know this is a difficult time for you.
I met with Delia a few times when she first came to work at the District and she was a very lovely person.
When I learned you two had married I had to chuckle because I remember my years at Rio and I always thought you were a very funny guy.
I'm sure you made her laugh many times over the years that followed and surely those memories will bring you some comfort in this difficult time.
I know you will celebrate her life with much love and joy!

Dear Steve and Family, I'm so sad to hear of Delia's passing. I didn't get to know her, but those who did have shared stories about her, and I'm sorry that I didn't have the pleasure. There are no words to make the hurt go away, but the memories of her will be with you to comfort you. Paula McCullough

How we will miss that beautiful angel. I will always remember working with her daily in the RMHS Health Office. Our friendship extended to lunches, house tours, movies, etc. Through her last years one could still see her beauty and inner light through the prison her body had become. I loved her and will miss her. She is now soaring with the angels. Bye dear friend.
