Eleanor Ruth Bohn Thomas, 87, of Camarillo, passed away Monday, Nov. 1, 2010.
Eleanor was born to the late Louis William and Jessie Van Auken Kenyon Bohn on Dec. 20, 1922, in Fargo, N.D. She graduated from North Dakota State University in 1944 with a B.S. in home economics. She earned teaching certificates from the State of Minnesota in 1944 and 1946 to teach home economics, English and science. Eleanor married the late Chan Powers Thomas on Dec. 11, 1948 in Fargo, N.D.
They had been married 49 years at the time of Chan's passing. Eleanor was a loving wife and mother devoted to her family. As a stay at home mom, she was also involved in the community. She was a member of and president of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, a group active in fundraising and support for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. When their youngest child began school, Eleanor began her teaching career. She began as a substitute teacher in Los Angeles, with long term assignments at schools including Pacific Palisades High School. Eleanor later gained a permanent position at Horace Mann Junior High School in Los Angeles, retiring from teaching in 1987.
In 1998 Eleanor moved to Camarillo and became very active in her Leisure Village community as a member of the Active Singles Group, the Christian Women's Club and as president of the Women's Club for two years, 2003 and 2004. She was a beloved member of her church, Trinity Presbyterian, active in the Lady's Bible Study and Super Seniors.
Eleanor is survived by her four children: John Morrow Thomas, born May 12, 1950 in Minneapolis, Minn.; Stephanie Anne Gibbs born May 10, 1951 in Buffalo, N.Y.; Caroline Powers Wilson born April 29, 1960 in Los Angeles; and Bonnie Kenyon Barron born Sept. 27, 1962 in Los Angeles. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and one niece.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Camarillo. Arrangements were made with the assistance of Griffin Family Funeral Chapels, Camarillo; 482-1166.
