I regret that I could not attend his funeral...in tribute to a noble and polite gentleman who was my neighbor for many years and also a neighborly, long-time friend to my parents as well. Mr. Soto loved to be in his yard of the beautiful home he shared with Maria. They have always been so generous and thoughtful, to share food and entertain, bring us veggies from the garden or some of Maria's awesome roses. These are good people! They "show up" and care. Both good times and bad times, they've "been there" for our family. I will always have fond memories of Alfred's big, annual December birthday parties and the making of tamales and hot chocolate. It seemed that even though it was becoming harder for Alfred to be physically active, Maria would encourage him to get out and walk and it was very important for him. My impression was always that he loved her so, so much. Alfred thought Frank hung the moon and would update me on all the things Frank was doing in his young life over the years. My dad and Alfred (the same age) exchanged quite a few war stories which I imagine they probably didn't talk about with much anyone else unless it was another veteran who would understand what it meant to be in service in time of conflict, and I know Alfred had a rough go of it over in Korea. He would tell me about how terribly cold it was there and I would see him out in the yard with a jacket on, doing his yardwork in former years on a really hot day and wonder to myself how much he must have hated that snow and ice because he was so conditioned to warmer weather being in SoCal his whole life. Oh, what a nice man he was! So mannerly, friendly and kind. I will miss seeing him. Rest sweetly and in peace, dear Alfred.
