Marilyn Carol Hayes Asplund was born March 9, 1942, and passed away January 25, 2013. Marilyn was the eldest of two daughters born to Vernon Ralph Hayes and Marjorie Lucille Israelson.
Daughter of a Navy captain, she grew up in various places around the United States. She graduated from Los Cerritos High School in the Bay Area, then attended Brigham Young University and graduated from University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
She married Leon Ray Asplund on October 20, 1962. They lived in Utah until 1968, when they moved to Granada Hills. Then they moved to Simi Valley in 1969, where they resided for the remainder of their lives. She was a high school teacher for more than 35 years, most of that time spent at Taft High School in Woodland Hills. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
At the time of her death, she was serving as President of her ward's Relief Society. Throughout her life she served in many different callings including callings in Cub Scouts, Primary, Young Women's and as a music chorister. She had also served as a worker in the Los Angeles LDS Temple for 11 years.
She is survived by her sister, Jeanne Katherine Hayes Grover; three sons, Craig Leon, Richard Mark, David Jared; one daughter, Christine Dawn (McGraw); 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepsons; and five step-granddaughters.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and one grandson, Geoffrey Allen Asplund.
She spent her life in service to her family, friends, students and co-workers. She was generous and loving to everyone. She loved her family unconditionally. She loved the temple. She was taken from us too soon. None of us were prepared for her passing, but we have faith that she is having a happy reunion with her loved ones in the afterlife.
A viewing is scheduled at the LDS Church building located at 5028 Cochran Street in Simi Valley on Thursday, January 31, at 9 a.m. with services held at 10 a.m., followed by burial at Oak Wood Cemetery in Chatsworth.

I went to high school (El Cerrito High School, CA) with both Marilyn and Jeannie. During those years, Jeannie was a treasured friend in our musical "pack." (We called ourselves the Lemon Sisters.)
Marilyn, two years older, was a wise mentor. Aways cheerful, never frustrated with those of us who must have seemed quite childish. It's perfectly logical to me that she became a teacher...her heart was so giving, and her actions so strong!
My sympathy to Jeannie and the other members of the extended Hayes family from one who she influenced early in life. Walk in peace...

Every time I hear the Primary song, "I often go walking..", I think of Marilyn. She taught it to the children for Mother's Day one year. She was the epitome of graciousness and kindness and always had a smile for everyone. Her son Richard was the best babysitter we ever had. May Heavenly Father comfort and bless your family. Love, Vivian Gundestrup

I worked with Marilyn at Taft, and remember her as a kind, caring lady. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this very difficult time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. Your mother was a wonderful person who was loved by all who knew her. She was a perfect example of a wonderful mother and grandmother, she showed great compassion in her service to others , she was loving and kind, she was always happy and smiling, and she was a wonderful friend. She touched our lives and we will miss her dearly.

Marilyn is my cousin and I have many memories of her and Jeannie as little girls roller skating in San Diego, joining our family at the beach when we were young, sleeping in my brothers' room on Christmas Eve and laughing in terror as my father's traps were tripped announcing to him that we were escaping our room to view Christmas before it was time, swimming in their parent's pool, and more recently bumping into her and Jeannie in the airport as they were leaving for a cruise on New England's coastline. Always smiling, laughing and enjoying life. I will miss you Marilyn, but I know you have lived a good life filled with faith and love for the Lord; therefore, all is well. I'll wait to hug you again when I graduate from earth-life :) Love you.
