Barbara was born April 24, 1921 to Claude LaVerne and Olive Natalie (Fowler) Barkley in Grand Rapids, Mich. She graduated from the University of Michigan School of Nursing. In 1945 she married The Reverend E. Edward M. Philipson. His ministry took them from Big Rapids in Michigan to Emporium, Sunbury, and Bradford, all in Pennsylvania, over the course of 38 years.
Upon Ed's retirement, they relocated to Pine Knoll Shores, N.C. Barbara moved to Denton, Texas in 1994 to be closer to family. Barbara will be sorely missed by all of those who knew and loved her. Barbara was a loving mother, friend, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a devoted Christian and supportive clergy wife. She loved travel, volunteer work, needlework, and bridge, and took up watercolor painting after retiring. She was a member of The Episcopal Church and the Order of the Daughters of the King as well as numerous other civic and volunteer organizations.
Barbara is survived by her brother, George Barkley of Weilheim, in Upper Bavaria, Germany; and her children: daughter, Betsy Kensinger and husband John of Denton, Texas; sons, William Philipson of Camarillo, Dr. Thomas Philipson (M.D.) and wife Carilyn of Denver, Colo., and John Philipson and wife Margaret of Denver, Colo. A Requiem Mass will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, at The Church of St. David of Wales, 623 Ector St., Denton, TX 76201. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Parish Hall. Barbara's remains will be interred at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Morehead City, N.C., with her husbands at a future date. Barbaras family wishes to thank the Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village staff, and especially the Health Care Center staff for their loving care over the past few years.
