He graduated in June 1961 at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He married the love of his life, best friend and soul mate, Geraldine, on Sept. 24,1961 and she sang to him on that day, "Whither Thou Goest I Will Go." She truly fulfilled that promise throughout their 49 years of marriage, going with him to Africa, Guam, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands to work in bush hospitals.
Dr. Gaines was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. He had a smile that could open up any room. He was a caring and giving man, always willing to help those he touched. He loved to tell happy stories and was known for his caring ways, his wink and deep laughter. Dr. Gaines provided free rent to the Simi Valley Crisis Pregnancy Center for several years. During his practice he delivered over 3,900 babies and has been known to treat three to four generations in this small community.
Dr. Gaines has also served on the Ventura County Medical Society Board of Directors as well as serving on the board of directors of the Simi Valley Community Hospital. He was a life member of the Flying Samaritans and Liga International, flying into clinics in Baja, Mexico to provide free medical care to the extremely poor. He was instrumental in getting a small baby boy being diagnosed with a congenital heart defect into the states for surgical repair that saved this boys life.
Dr. Gaines was on the Board of the Rancho Simi Valley Parks and Recreation, a Founder and on the Board of Directors of Simi Valley Bank with a group of exceptional friends, a member and past President of the Loma Linda Councillors, a patron of Simi Valley Community Concerts, and a donor to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the Cultural Arts Center of Simi Valley. Since 1964 he has been a member of Simi Valley noon time Rotary and especially enjoyed that relationship with wonderful people.
Dr. Gaines was preceded in death by infant son, Gregory Paul in 1971, and his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Geri; daughters, Geralyn and Daina; sons, Darin, and Geoffrey; their spouses and five precious grandchildren; and his sisters, Joyce and Carol and their spouses and children.

Dr. Gaines was our family doctor for over 30 years my mother adored him and my dad trusted only him. I looked up to him not because he was soooo tall but because he taught me a lot about medicine and I worked at the free clinic with him. Sorry to hear of his passing but his legacy will never be forgotten of how much he cared about people all over the world. God bless you all and my condolences and prayers to his family.

To the Gaines family,
We were so sorry to read of Dr. Gaines passing. He stepped in for the doctor that was supposed to deliver our daughter Linda on March 12, 1965. He was the most caring doctor I have ever met and it was my privilege to have him at my side. Our condolences to his loving family.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Gaines passing. He was my doctor and delivered my daughter. I was known as the "pastry lady" by him and his staff. I would request morning appt's and I would always bring in warm homemade pastries for all to enjoy. He always teased me about "fattening everyone up" right along with my pregnancy. Amazingly enough, the daughter he delivered grew up and worked for Dr. Gaines....... Wonderful man.
Thank you Doctor for all you did for everyone.

Dr. Gaines was my doctor when I was a little girl living in Simi Valley but I rememeber him best for helping my grandfather, Tom Harris, who battled cancer for many years. My grandfather was never one to trust doctors but he thought the world of Dr. Gaines. I am very sad that such a gentle, kind man is no longer with us. My love and prayers go to his family and friends.

"I was one of 13 children growing up in Simi Valley. Throughout my childhood I was accident prone. My family did not have much in the way of wealth, but that never stopped Dr. Gaines from treating my many wounds. Because of him I have 20/5 vision in both eyes, working toes on my right foot, and a true sense of caring for others, he truly led by example here. I have so much because of his generosities. He will be missed and honored. May God hold your family close, and thank you Doctor for being so kind to me and my family. You will never be forgotten” Henry P Pielaet Jr

When I was an ENT resident at the White Memorial Hospital, Dr. Gaines brought one of his daughters for Tonsillectomy by my chief, Dr. House. That was the first time I met Dr. Gaines. He encouraged me to open an office in Simi in 1974. Dr. Gaines and Dr. Austel supported my practice and now we are the largest ENT group in Ventura County. We owed Dr. Gaines and Dr. Austel for their support, guidance and friendship. We will miss him greatly. My deepest sympathy and condolence to the Gaines family.

Dr Gaines was a wonderful and kind hearted doctor...being a new mother was a little scary, but he was always reassuring with a great sense of humor. Both my kids were delivered by Dr Gaines - Daniel in 1997 and Shae in 1995, including my niece and nephew. My family and I will always be greatful to Dr Gaines. We send our deepest sympathy to his family and hope they know just how much he meant to his patients in the Simi Valley community.

Dr. Gaines took care of me as a kid and I always thought he was wise. His demeanor seemed to always be calm and professional. He was a colleague, business partner and close friend of my fathers. Most important, he was a man of faith.
