Helen Denny Obituary

9/2/1925-12/16/2010 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we the family of Helen Denny, 85, announce her passing on Thursday, December 16, 2010.

Helen was born in Rockville, MD to Ada Jane (full Sioux Indian) and Daniel Matthew Kerrick (full German) on September 2, 1925. She had been a resident of Ventura County for over 62 years and came here from Fairfax, VA.

After 31 1/2 years, she retired as a Psychiatric Technician from Camarillo State Hospital. She then worked P/T at Everest & Jennings wheelchair in Camarillo. With her love to help people, she took care of seniors in Camarillo. Doing their cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, taking them to doctor appointments and whatever they needed her to do for them.

Helen was a loving mother and grandmother. She was known as "Grandma Denny" to her grandchildren's friends. She would take all three children and their friends to different functions on a regular basis. She loved taking her grandchildren to baseball games, water slides, and to the beach. She would take each one wherever they wanted to go. She even took three additional children (all three were siblings and friends of her own grandchildren) to Las Vegas, NV to Circus Circus and to the big water slide one summer.

Helen was a lover of dogs and had several throughout her life. She would cook chicken daily for her dog Timber and sit outside and brush his fur for hours. Her grandchildren were the love of her life and there was nothing she wouldn't do for them.

As she got older, Alzheimer's set in making it difficult to know her five great-granddaughters. She loved her family dearly and each one held a special place in her heart. Helen touched many lives and was loved by those who knew her. She will be greatly missed by all of us. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bun) of Somis, CA; and her sister Catherine of Columbia, SC. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lydia and Michael Barra of Ventura, CA; grandson, Chris Denny of Knoxville, TN; granddaughter and great-granddaughters, Sonia, Allison and Emily Childers of Lee's Summit, MO; grandson Aaron Taylor, grand daughter-in-law, Kelly, and great granddaughters Sydney, Baylee and Emersyn from Somis, CA; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Grace Kerrick from Fairfax, VA; sister Gladys Elston from Orange Park, FL; sisters-in-laws; Judith Mitchell and Annie Tenenbaum; brother-in-law, David Denny; several nieces and nephews, and her very best and dear friend of many, many years, Johnny Milburn in Camarillo, Ca; which Helen passed away on Johnny's birthday.

A memorial celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Special love and thanks go out to Dierdre Daly and her loving, caring and understanding staff at Autumn Years at Ojai. And a "very special thanks" to Carrie at Livingston Memorial HOSPICE for taking the best care my mother could have ever had. Thank you all ever so much as you are angels on earth.

Dearest Aunt Helen, You were an angel on this earth and now you're with the Angels in heaven. You were always sweet and very loving but you were also loads of fun and a great dancer. I have so many special memories of you that are dear to my heart. Sending you love,

How can I start? Helen was one of my patient's I cared for. I work for Hospice. I knew Helen before she came onto Hospice however so I got to know her when she was still ambulatory and talking a lot. She was such sweet, loving lady. I remember her walking over to the dining tables and helping the other residents eat their food while talking to them and then she would help clean up their table with a smile. That is just a small memory but there are many more. She was on my care for a long time so I became very close to her. I miss you Miss Helen Denny with all of my heart. Kisses from here to there for you. XOXO

Ms. Denny, a grandmother... A friend! Most of all a very special person whom will always have a place in the hearts of those who knew her.

As a young man, she took me into her heart, her home and treated me like one of her own...

As children we grow older, spread our wings and at times never look back at yesterday. I regret not looking back enough to have missed the passing of one of the most influential persons in my upbringing. Grandma Denny, I will never forget you and will always have a soft spot in my heart for you and your family.

Some lessons that you left behind, one in particular, the love that you had for Timber, has spread onto me in my love for horses and my Blue Heelers... My cattle... and now my wife and children... The seed of love that you have shared, was planted, it grew and has spread like wildfire into those I have touched with your love that you taught me...

I James Gandy will always be greatful...

With such an honor, I look foward to being with you again in the Kingdom of Our Heavenly Father! Amen

I have so many things I want to say about my grandma. Number 1 is she was my hero. She was the most selfless person I know. She always put my mom and my brothers and I first. Making sure we had what we needed.
She taught me how to cook. I spent my first thanksgiving away from her in 1993. I called her on the phone at 2 am so she could walk me thru cooking my first turkey. We spent all morning comparing turkey on the phone!
My grandma always said her goal in life was to see us (my brothers and I) have children. She loved her "dollbabies" as she lovingly called them.
Some of her other loves were. Yellow roses. Johnny cash. Making pancakes on Saturday mornings.
I have so many fond memories of my grandma. I am a part of her and I thank God for blessing me with her. I miss our conversations . I miss her stubborness. I miss her!
I will see you again in heaven until then come visit in my dreams grandma. I will love you always and forever! Sonia

Aunt Helen was one of the kindest, most caring, self-less people on this planet. She always had positive things to say and her family meant the world to her. She was also loads of fun! She loved music and she loved to dance. I think it was Johnny Horton who sang her favorite song. I have many wonderful memories- really good times through out my entire life, of my sweet Aunt Helen. May she rest in Peace and sing and dance with the Angels.

Dear Lydia and all of her grandchildren:
My fondest memories of your mother and grandmother go way, way back, to when we rode the school bus to Fairfax High School. She was one of a kind. A very special lady who never thought of herself, but always others. Her family came first, of course, but it didn't end there. We had many, many good times on trips across the country, dances, especially at their home in Somis, and all the wonderful food and attention she lavished on everyone. The entire family was always welcome and treated with the utmost love and kindness. We will miss her but she is in a much happier place now with the angels, of which I am sure she is now one.
All my love to all of you,
Aunt Judy

Buck and I are deeply saddened to hear of your mother's passing. We have many fond memories of her and your Dad; especially, when Buck was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base. They always had an open door for us. We enjoyed going to Disneyland on several occasions with them. They were both very special people. Our deepest condolences. Buck and Carolyn
