On Oct. 30, 2010, Henry F. "Skip" Hager, III, passed away in San Rafael, Calif., at the age of 72. Born Nov. 10, 1937, in Pittsburg, Pa., Skip grew up in Massillon, Ohio.
He graduated from Canton's Central Catholic High School and the University of Dayton with a degree in business. He later earned his Master's Degree from the Phillips Institute. Skip served several years as an Army officer, including a tour in Korea.
In 1962, he married Brenda Bart, daughter of Vera and Albert Bart of Dayton, Ohio. They had three children. For many years, Skip worked in sales for 3M, which brought the Hager family to Camarillo. The family was active in their local parish, St. Mary Magdalen. In 1980, the Hager's opened the first Subway Sandwich restaurant in Ventura County, and continued to develop the franchise for many years.
In the last several years, Skip enjoyed consulting for and managing tasting rooms at several wineries in the Sonoma, Calif. area. Skip will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Preceded in death by his father, Henry, and brother, Michael, he is survived by his mother, Marjorie; sister, Christine O'Neel and family; ex-wife, Brenda; son, Stephen Hager; daughters, Susan (Hager) Krieger and Katherine (Hager) Barton; six granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dear Hager Family,
We are sadden with the passing of Skip Hager, please accept our deepest sympathies. Our prayers and thoughts are with your family.
I just returned from a long vacation and found Skip's notice in our local Star Paper. I have not seen Skip for about 49 years.
We attended missile training school together at Fort Bliss, Texas in 1961 and served together in Korea. We even flew back to the States together. My duty driver and I escorted him to the San Francisco airport for his flight home to Ohio. He was very anxious to attend his marriage with Brenda. We even changed our original flight from Korea and took an earlier flight, which actually took longer than our original flight. We had a jet liner scheduled, but by changing we ended up flying to California with a stop at Wake Island in a propeller driven C-135 Airplane.
It was a shock to read of his passing and to see that he had once lived 30 miles from me. I live in Ventura, California. It is a shame that our paths did not cross again for a shared bottle of wine and conversation.
Sincerely, Ed Jue

I remember Skip's booming laugh and his carrying voice. It made him seem so much larger than life to the little kid that I was. His family would come to my house regularly as he and Brenda were active in Marriage Encounter. My condolences and prayers to the Hager clan.
