Hugh B. Davies, 87, of Oxnard, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010 at his home following a long illness.
Hugh was born Aug. 30, 1923 in Summerland, British Columbia, Canada, and he was a Ventura County resident for the past 15 years coming from Granada Hills.
Hugh was a hero of freedom. He joined the Royal Canadian Airforce in 1943 and trained in a Tiger Moth, a two-seat, single engine biplane. He was trained as a gunner, and later a radio operator for the Halifax Bomber and served with the 76th Air Squadron flying missions over France and Germany.
He was a longtime Ham Radio operator and an active volunteer for food share. Hugh moved to California in 1950 and began a distinguished 37-year career for Capitol Records as a recording engineer.
He won two Grammy Awards; one for Glenn Campbell, Wichita Lineman, and the other for Laurindo Almeida, The Exodus. When the Beatles played the Hollywood Bowl in 1964, Capitol Records sent their best man, Hugh Davies, to do the sound engineering. Hugh retired from Capitol Records in 1985 and then worked for five more years for Harmonial Mundi.
Over the years in his career Hugh was the recording engineer for many world famous artists including: Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and Frank Sinatra, Jr., Glen Campbell, Nelson Riddlr, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Buck Owens, Helen Reddy, Bobby Darin, Nat King Cole, Gram Parsons, and the Beach Boys.
Hugh is survived by his life partner, Fay Owen of Oxnard; sons, Sherwood Davies and his wife Cathryn of Newbury Park, Christopher Davies and his wife Tara of Granada Hills; daughter, Maya Lukacs and her husband Karoly of Oakland; grandchildren, Michelle, Kailie, Lilla, and Nina.

I met Hugh and Fay while renting the downstairs apartment from them. Hugh was always quick with a smile and had a great sense of humor, and his love for Fay was obvious and ever present. He was a great man who did a great many things. He will be missed.

Hugh, I met you through Pat your next door neighbor who was my friend from Arizona. My personal first impression of you was your kindness, gentle and loving manners.
You loved to cook dinner for all of your friends. Red wine, Loving Stories of the Sane & Crazy Singers you worked with were always entertaining.
Jere & I missed you & yours every time we left you and Fay to go back to Arizona.
Our Thoughts & Memories will be with you forever.
We Love You,

Hugh was very thoughtful, in a quirky kind of way.
Once, I was lunching with a client at the Brown Derby, when Hugh had me paged, for no apparent reason. Later, back at work, I asked why. His answer: The movie stars of the 30s & 40s used to say "Page me at the Brown Derby." Now, someday you can tell your grandchildren you have joined the Hollywood stars - you were paged at the Brown Derby too. Fay, you are in our prayers.

I had the honor to meet Hugh and Faye in Mexico while I was there attempting to sell Timeshare at a fabulous resort. I loved them both immediately. My husband was a singer, songwriter and Hugh was generous enough to listen to his music and give his valued opinion of his talent. I looked them up every day on the resort and always found them relaxing under a big umbrella by the pool. They were a wonderful couple and their love was contagious. He will be very missed. My prayers are with Faye and all of Hugh's loved ones.
