June 17, 1953-Sept. 28, 2010 It is with great sadness and love in our hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Janet de la Torriente, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Janet died in peace at home with her family by her side as her favorite clock struck three on Sept. 28, 2010. Janet was born on June 17, 1953 in Van Nuys and came to Simi Valley with her family in the early 1960s where she graduated from Simi Valley High School. In 1971 she gave birth to her daughter Deanna.
Janet enlisted in the Army in 1976 and was honorably discharged in 1979 prior to getting married to the love of her life, Luis. Janet worked in the manufacturing field and retired in 2005 as a supervisor from Anthony International. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 and going into remission, Janet became a vigilant fighter for cancer research and prevention. She participated in the Relay for Life and walked in the Avon Three Day Walk with her cancer support group, the HK Belles. Even after being diagnosed with metastasized breast cancer in 2007, Janet continued to fight. In 2009 she became the eighth participant in a newly approved clinical research trial. She wanted to make sure she was making a difference for her children and grandchildren whom she cherished.
Janet is survived by her loving husband, Luis de la Torriente; mother, Maria Doughty; daughter, Deanna Eskridge (Sean); stepson, Luis de la Torriente, Jr. (Tami); stepdaughters, Katherine Prado (Tony), Christine de la Torriente; sisters, Rosanne Kemp and Teri Ryan (Dan); brother, Manuel Rodriguez; grandchildren, Ashley, Anthony, Cheyenne, Jarrett, Luis III, Christopher, Justin, Amanda, Victoria, and Sophia; great-grandchildren, Travis, Kayden, and Paige; plus many other family and friends. Janet was preceded in death by her father, John Doughty.
There will be a celebration of Janet's life at 11 a.m. on Oct. 8, at StoneBridge Community Church, 4832 Cochran St., Simi Valley. Reception will follow at Janet's beloved home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the American Cancer Society or Susan G. Koman Foundation. She is loved and will be missed by many, as she has touched so many lives. I am so sorry to hear of Janet's passing in the news paper today. I first met Janet and her sister Rosanne when they lived on Buyers Street in Simi Valley. Rosanne and I became friends as the years went by. I have not talked to either one in over 20 years and every time I drive by Buyers Street, I wonder what they are up to these days. My heart is sad for Janet and her family. Sincerely, Ron Hewitt
