John Joseph Castanon, age 54, was a lifetime resident of Oxnard.
He was born on Jan. 12, 1956. On Oct. 13, 2010 John's life ended unexpectedly due to a sudden illness. The family is at peace knowing that he is now joining his loved ones in heaven. John will always be remembered as an intelligent, kindhearted man who lived his life with much gratitude. His ability to enjoy life's simplest pleasures kept him positive and appreciative of the many moments he shared with his family and dear friends. John was respected and loved by all those who knew him. During John's life he worked as a longshoreman, a mover, and many other versatile side jobs. He was known to be a hard worker who never passed up an opportunity to earn an honest living.
During his free time he kept his mind alert by completing crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper, watching Jeopardy, studying almanac facts, and keeping up with all the sports trivia. John loved a challenge. Those that knew him well nicknamed him Columbo for his quick wit. You could ask him almost any question about history, geography, presidential facts, sports, and politics, and he usually knew the right answer! His greatest joy was spending time with his youngest son, Joseph. He looked forward to playing ball with his son and taking him to the park.
John truly loved his Godparents, Phillip and Stella Silva, who always made him feel comfortable by providing him with a loving and peaceful place to enjoy Sunday afternoons. The family would like to especially thank all those who helped John during some of his difficult life challenges. We will be eternally grateful to those who helped him.
Special thanks to Phillip and Stella Silva, Laura Martinez, Corey Bailey, and the numerous friends and Colonia businesses that looked after him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Gloria Castanon. He is survived by his son, John Joseph of Oxnard; his five brothers and sisters: Daniel Castanon of Santa Barbara, RoseAnn Castanon Hernandez of San Diego, Diane Castanon Forsyth (husband John) of San Francisco, Emily Lopez (husband Mauricio) of Bakersfield, Richard Castanon (wife Veronica) of Oxnard; as well as many relatives and numerous friends.
Family and friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. at the Reardon Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Oxnard. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura. After burial, reception to follow at Moose Lodge, 1935 Oxnard Blvd. All family and John's friends are welcome to attend. Mr. Castanon has been entrusted to the care of the Family Owned Reardon Funeral Home, 511 North A St., Oxnard; 487-1720.

My name is Margie Franco and I grew up on Mckinley with John. He was like a brother to me and my family. John was kind, always Happy and ready to lend a helping hand any time you needed him. Just last week John was at my Mom's house helping us load a dresser into the house. If he was walking by and saw someone needing help he was there for you. The world is a sadder place with John gone but I know My mom Carmen Fuentes and Carlos Fuentes & My brother Tatie were there along with some of John's family and friends ready to greet him into Heaven. You will be missed John! God bless you and your family.

We were saddened to hear about John's passing. We have known him for a long time and John had become like family to us. Whenever we saw John, it was usually hugs and kisses. He was always respectful and happy. His conversations and the way he explained himself were always very thorough and with alot of energy and detail. I guess that's why he was "Columbo". John was "good people'. We share in your grief. Our Condolences to the Castanon family.
