Mildred Bertha Howe was born Jan. 15, 1917 in Deary, Idaho, to Thomas and Jennie Westby. She was one of five children, four of whom predeceased her.
Mildred grew up first in Deary and then Potlatch, Idaho, graduating from Potlatch High School in 1935 and St. Lukes School of Nursing in Spokane, Wash., in 1939. She married Walter Howe in 1940, a union lasting over 60 years until Walters passing in 2001. Sometime after moving to Oxnard in 1954 Mildred began working as a nurse at Camarillo State Hospital, a position she held for many years.
An avid reader most of her life she especially enjoyed history, historical novels and word games. She was a quiet, kind and gentle lady whose greatest joy in life was her family. All of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren remember with gratitude all the many kindnesses and thoughtful expressions of love given them by her through the years.
Mildred peacefully slipped away at her home to be with her Lord Friday morning, Nov. 26 at the age of 93. She was the last one in her family remaining of that generation but is survived by her three children: Ruth (John) Maatta of Chester, Mont., Bob (Carolyn) Howe of Oxnard, and Carol (Lute) Watson of Carson City, Nev., and her five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

Mom was the quietest, sweetest, kindest, most generous and most gracious person I have ever known. We will miss her and her great sense of humor very much. She was always so appreciative of anything anyone did for her. She was one of a kind. I'm looking forward to seeing her and hugging her again!

Mildred was a sweet, kind lady with a great sense of humor! Although very quiet by nature, she clearly enjoyed company and having people to visit with...even if she didn't say much! She is no longer suffering and no longer cold, as she hated being cold! She will be thought of often!
