Sumiko Duenas, 82, died Oct. 10, 2010, in Thousand Oaks of natural causes.
Sumiko was born Sept. 25, 1928, in Wakkanai, Japan (Hokkaido). She married Staff Sergeant Jose Bamba Duenas in 1956 and moved to Oxnard in 1965. After the death of her husband in December of 1965 who was killed in action in South Viet Nam, Sumiko devoted all of her time to raising her four children: Jose, Carmen, Cecilia, and Terrisa. Her interests included sewing, gardening, and cooking. But her passion was painting.
Sumiko is survived by her children, Jose Duenas, Carmen Lamp, Cecilia Duenas, and Terrisa Duenas; three grandchildren, Sarah, Rebecca, and Jane Lamp; sons-in-law, Scott Lamp and Jason Lockwood; daughter-in-law, Terri Duenas.
In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of our mother to organizations supporting the Armed Forces would be appreciated (e.g., Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled Veterans of America, National Association for Uniformed Services).
Services were held on Oct. 20, 2010 at Conrad-Carroll Mortuary. Burial took place at Santa Clara Cemetery.

Jose and family,
My deepest sympathy to you and your family. As I write this, I realize my mom would have been 74 today, and has been in Heaven now 27 years. I miss her no less than when she died...our moms are just so special. I will keep you in my prayers, my friend.
Much love,
Joni

Sumiko was a cherished family friend over the decades. We will certainly miss her and can only hope that the family can find the support they need to get through this hardship.
Sumiko put her children as a first priority when the time came & nobody could have done a better job.
May the Lord give you the needed strength at this time.
