Thomas Nolan Hutchason of Ventura died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on Friday, Nov. 18, 2010.
Born in Oxnard on June 14, 1960 to Peggy Lou Turner (aka Peggy Fontan) and Nolan Hutchason, Tom lived in Ventura County for a time before the family moved to San Diego, where he graduated from Sweetwater Union High School. In the late 1990s Tom returned to Ventura County. Tom worked as a hotel manager for most of his life and was always popular with guests and staff.
Recently he went back to school and earned his credentials as a certified medical assistant. Most recently he worked as a caretaker for an older Ventura woman and spent much of his time doing volunteer work. For several years now Tom has volunteered for AIDS Project Ventura Countys Necessities of Life Food Pantry run by the Ventura County Rainbow Alliance.
In addition to helping out at the food pantry, Tom sat on the steering committee of Ventura County Pride 2010 and was instrumental in managing much of the events logistics. Toms latest volunteer project has been working on COLOR Gardens. Ever since getting involved with the garden project in March of this year Tom has been one of the most dedicated volunteers, often showing up during the week to water the whole gardens by hand. All of Toms friends know him as a warm, loving, loyal friend who was always willing to lend a hand.
He was always there to help someone move or take somebody to the airport. And if you ever needed a friendly, honest, non-judgmental person to listen to you and give you advice, Tom was your guy.
Tom is survived by his sister, Teri Wells of Los Angeles; his brother, David Fontan of San Diego; and two nieces and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as a tremendous chosen family of close friends.
In lieu of flowers Tom asks for donations to Community Organized for Liberty Opportunity & Respect, PO Box 23350 Ventura, CA 93002.
