Wanda Faria Obituary

Wanda Fay Faria, 88, of Ventura, passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 8, 2010 in her home after a lengthy illness.

Wanda was born to Otis and Myrtle Doran of Chismville, Ark., on Aug. 30, 1922. At the age of three her family moved to Ventura where she was raised, educated and ultimately met the love of her life, Frank Faria. After completing Ventura High School, a year later they married. At the time of Frank's death in 1993, they had shared 56 years of marriage together. Within the first five years of their marriage, their only child Linda was born, World War II started and Frank joined the army, while Wanda took a job at the P & H Market then later at Ashton's Market.

As daughter Linda was graduating from high school, Wanda, decided she would return to school to get a nursing degree. She spent nearly 10 years working as an LVN first in local skilled nursing facilities then at the Ventura General Hospital, where she completed her internship. Upon Frank's retirement, he encouraged Wanda to join him so they could more actively participate in activities of the Elk's Lodge that they so enjoyed, such as fish fry's, campouts, bingo and holiday gatherings.

In addition, Wanda was an active member in the women's "Emblem Club" and their fundraising for needy causes. Wanda also enjoyed annual trips to Oregon to visit her daughter and traveled throughout the United States and Europe. She was an excellent homemaker who enjoyed entertaining family and friends and was a true-blue, die-hard Dodger fan who never missed following their season. Her many acts of kindness and thoughtfulness will be missed.

Wanda is survived by her daughter, Linda; brothers, James "Jay" and Thomas "Tommy" Doran; her sister-in-law, Carmen Doran; nieces, Darleen (Robert), Kathy, Roberta and Jeanine (Russell); nephews, Jeff, James and Jack; great-nieces, Carla, Elvira (Bradley), Adriana; great-nephews, Dennis, Dale, Jeremy, Ernest Jr., Brendan and Patrick; as well as, the great-aunts and cousins so special to her, who remain in Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas and Florida.

Wanda is preceded in death by her husband, Frank, and nephew, Ernest Sr.

It is suggested that those who desire to make a memorial gift send it to Ventura County Community Foundation in the name of the Faria Family Foundation, which for more than 25 years has supported numerous local charities and organizations or to a charity of choice.

With much gratitude, a special thank you goes to Marcia, her dear friend and longstanding caregiver, as well as Assisted Home Care staff Rachel and Nunila; Assisted Home Hospice staff Rosemary and Shana for their compassionate care.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, with The Reverend Dan Hull officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Rd., Ventura.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura. Condolences may be left at www.TedMayrFuneralHome.com.

Linda, sorry for your loss. Your mother and dad were wonderful people. Maurice (Herb) worked with Franky many years at Coline Gas and done a lot of fishing and poker playing together Your mom Wanda would also attend the poker games and all the women chatted. Your dad drove his motorcyle to Washington to see us after we moved up here. We have very fond memories of Your mother Wanda and your Dad.
