William Hendren Obituary

Rev. William Freeman Hendren passed away Friday, May 3, 2013 surrounded by family. He was born June 26, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Katherine Hendren, attended Morgan Park Military Academy, Morgan Park Illinois, graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and received his Master's of Theology Degree from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. He served in the United States Army from October 1950 until his honorable discharge in December 1952.

William married Aleen Lavinia Lettsome in August of 1956. They were blessed with three children: Robert, Jean (Ceddia), and Allen Hendren. He and Aleen moved to Ventura, California in 1966 when he was called to the ministry of Church of the Foothills, which was to become his life's calling. The family was host to 3 A.F.S. students during this time. After Aleen's death in 1984 he married Heather (Whipple) Hendren in October 1986 and continued his ministry in Ventura until his retirement.

A lifelong track and field runner he was inducted into the Carleton College sports Hall of Fame in 2002, and was a pioneer in the Ventura, Tigers youth track program. A lover of the arts and community Bill volunteered his time and talents to many organizations in and around the Ventura area including: Friends of the Library, Project Understanding, Interfaith Caregivers, Crop Walk, Habitat for Humanity, Amnesty International, served as president of the Ventura County Master Chorale, and was awarded for donating 100 gallons of blood to United Blood Services. He was an avid fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago White Sox.

A lifetime member of The Prairie Club, Bill spent a portion of every summer, except for the two he was on active duty, at the family cottages at Camp Hazlehurst in Harbert, Michigan. Known to many generations as "Uncle Bill" he enjoyed reading by the pond, challenging all takers to a game of Monopoly, swimming at the beach, and leading the annual hike to Warren Dunes State Park and the climbing of Mount Baldy.

Bill is survived by his wife Heather Hendren of Ventura, children Jean Ceddia of Mystic Connecticut, Allen(Barbara) Hendren of Apple Canyon Lake, Illinois, Chris (Jennifer) Whipple of Los Osos, Kent Whipple of Ventura, and Tonya (Kevin) Bean of San Clemente and 8 grandchildren: Emma and William Ceddia, Samantha and Jonathon Hendren, Lewin, Beckett and Felix Whipple, and Austin Bean. Bill is also survived by sister Margy (Bill) Lee of Skaneateles, New York. He will be lovingly remembered as "Uncle Bill" by his niece, nephews, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Aleen and son Robert.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 19, 2013 at the Church of the Foothills in Ventura California at 2:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Foothills Endowment Fund, which Rev. Hendren created to provide for needs within the church and in the community of Ventura.

As I light this virtual candle, I know his light has not gone out but shines at us from a different window. Thank you for all the light you brought to my life.

The greatest testament of a person's life is the joy and love that they bring to those they have touched so deeply. As we all know, Bill has touched many lives with love and kindness. I know, Heather is my sister. She has shared these many blessings together with Bill as they gave of themselves and received so much love in return.

My every thought, every prayer, every joy and every tear, I share with Heather, Tonya, Kent, Chris, family, friends and church members that will always keep Bill in their thoughts.

In Loving Memory......

Dear Heather and family, Bill was a moving force in Ventura. His faith, insight and judgement guided him as he contributed so generously to the community. I feel honored to have known him in our work together on behalf of the Ventura County Master Chorale. Fondly,

Bill was a such a tremendous influence in my life. During my teen years I became a member of the Church of the Foothills. At the time, I was probably headed toward some "poor choices" as we parents would say. I really appreciated the compassion and acceptance Bill had for all people and all religions. When I think of Bill, the word "gentle" comes to mind.

I'm sure I speak for many when I say Bill and his family were an inspiration and friend to me and my family. His kind, open, gentle manner countered his thoughtful, deep, analytical views. He presented a variety of ways to follow Christ and embrace faith. His spirit lives!

What a special person to have known. Generous, kind, funny, full of life. Of all the Hazel-Hurst folks, Bill was a cornerstone for me. The plays, Warren Dunes hike, corn roast picnic on the beach. To Jean, Allen, Heather and all his family God bless you all. What a wonderful person he was!

Bill became our friend the moment he and Aleen came to visit the Church, as a candidate for Pastor, and he remained our friend always. I was so grateful to him for coming down to say a few words at the memorial service for my husband Bob, in Los Angeles, eleven years ago. My children remember him fondly; Julie says he made church comfortable for her, even at her most heathen! and she blesses him for baptizing her babies. He was a family friend to us as he was to so many many families - kind, easy-going, forthright - a true Christian. I am forever thankful to have known him.

Our sympathy and prayers are with Heather, Jean, Allen and the rest of the family. Bill married the two of us in 1984, baptized our son in 1986 and remained our dear friend for these many years. His faith, sincerity, compassion for others and wisdom about the human condition are just a few of his many strengths. He was a role model for us and the many other lives he touched in our community. His numerous good deeds are living proof of God's presence among us. He will truly be missed by all of us who were privileged to know him. Bruce and Tena Young

Bill was my friend, my mentor, and my first colleague in ministry as Senior Pastor at Church of the Foothills during the time I was Associate Pastor there. I can't imagine a better person from whom to learn and observe how to best serve as a minister, and I give Bill MUCH of the credit for the success I have had in ministry over these past 28 years.
Your work in this world is done my friend, and now you have "graduated" to the realm of the spirit - enjoy your continuing journey there ... until we meet again.
Love ... CURT

Take care Bill; throughout your journey in life you have touched many of us. You've always held a special place in my heart; as my Pastor you confirmed me in the Church of Foothills UCC and later baptized my son Arik. You'll be missed by many.
