Glenn Velo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 17 to Jul. 20, 2011.

On Tuesday, July 12, 2011, God called our hero, Glenn up to Heaven. He was 52 years old and lived in Ventura County his whole life.

Glenn was born on Oct. 25, 1958 in Oxnard to his loving parents Bandelio and Gloria Velo, and his big sister Vicki. He attended St. Anthony's Grammar School and graduated from Santa Clara High School in 1976. After high school, Glenn went into the Police Academy. In September 1981, Glenn was accepted to join the Oxnard Police Department where he was a Police Officer, Detective and a Defensive Tactics Instructor.

In 1984, Glenn married his sweetie, Susan, and together they had three children. He also received his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice at the Union Institute and University. In July 2009, he retired after 28 years of service. Glenn loved his family, friends, surfing, his yellow labs, and music. He also enjoyed running, fishing, Karate, BBQ-ing, dancing and Karaoke. If there is one thing to say about Glenn, it was his heart. He had the biggest heart and was full of love. He loved to help people. No matter what it was, he was always there to do whatever he could. He was friendly, kind, generous, giving, well liked and loved by everyone. And to him, everything was cool!

Glenn is survived by his wife Susan Velo of 27 years; three children Nicole, Brian and Alicia; parents Bandelio and Gloria Velo; sister Vicki Luft; niece Katie Luft; in-laws Marlene and Chris Christopher; sister-in-law Kelly Zeigler, husband Rich, nephew Lem, and niece Maddie; sister-in-law Lynn Rowland, husband Bobby, nephew Patrick, and niece Molly. As well as many family members and friends. He will be missed, but not forgotten and his memory will live on forever.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in honor of Glenn. Memorial Service to be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Santa Clara Catholic Church, 323 South E St. in Oxnard, CA.

To My Loving Nephew

I think about you always and I sometimes ask, can you hear our prayers, can you feel how much we love you, do you know how much you are missed. I asked our lord today, lord is there something you can show me that Glenn knows we miss him and that you are at peace. He sent me a beautiful sunrise this morning, then he showed me the prettiest hummingbird and that's not all, when I went to start my car OYE COMO VA is playing on the radio! I sat there till the song ended, I closed my eyes and I thanked our lord for his gifts on this day, and I thanked you for being such a beautiful person and being part of our lives. My prayer for you today is that you have reached your journey and that you are at peace. We love you and miss you Glenn.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Velo, Susan, Nicole, Brian, Alicia, Vicki, and Katie:
Glenn was much more than a great friend to me. He taught me so much while hanging out with him during our SCHS days. Glenn was everything a friend could ask for and more. While growing up as high school friends, Glenn taught by example of how to treat others, how to work towards a goal, how to respect your parents and how to have fun. You gave me so much of your time and respect that I feel so honored to be your friend. I will never forget you and how much you gave to our community. You are my hero. God Bless you and your family.

Susan and family; I pray to God to give you all the strength and peace you will need to get thru this very sad time.

Glenn: When I think thru the many memmories I have of you, one of the best is at my Mom's 75th birthday. Our cousin, Terry, played 'Beyond the Sea' by Bobbie Darin over and over because it was one of Mom's favorites. You continued to dance with her every time it was played. Your patience was amazing. When I was younger, you always were so great to give me advice about tickets I would get (because I thought I was so 'cool') and you always called me back to be sure I was O.K.. You always said "What did you do now (and laugh) well you have to pay the ticket." When I see you again I know you will be smiling, and you will look at me and say, "What did you do now."

I love you and will miss you always,
Your cousin,
Rita

When people pass on, people almost always heap accolades onto the person: “nice,” gentle,” “funny,” etc. All the accolades you see here are no exaggeration of the type of man that Glenn was. There was a general consistency in his behavior towards all kinds of people that you rarely find. If you were his family member, coworker, or somebody he arrested, he treated you with respect. I had commented to my friend at the Oxnard Police Department, “I bet you some people that Glenn arrested liked him.” Sure enough, she did tell me that a few of Glenn’s former arrestees had, indeed, returned to the police station and told her that he never talked down to them and he was very respectful of them.

If I had the privilege of being a mother, I would have wanted a son like Glenn. I feel honored to have known him.

To the Velo family my sincere condolence's. The world has lost one of the finest human beings I ever had the honor of knowing. It had been a few years since I had seen Glenn and I ran into him leaving the grocery store here on the East end of Ventura...a few months prior to running into him I had lost my 3 year old grandson in a tragic accident here in Ventura and was still very upset about it. I remember him picking up on the fact that something wasn't right with me that day and he got me to open up to what was going on. After 30 minutes of many tears and listening to his calming voice he gave me a big hug and told me if I needed to talk more to please give him a call. I felt so much better after talking with him and the only regret I have is that was the last time I saw him, I never picked up the phone to tell him how much it meant to me that he took a little of his time to let me cry on his shoulder. Glenn I know your looking down on all of us and here is a big "THANK YOU" that I should of taken care of a couple of months ago. You were a wonderful human being and I thank you for letting me call you a friend. Sleep well friend until we meet again...Dave Sampson

July 20, 2011

Glen, I lived across the street from you for many years and I admired you so much for becoming a great peace officer. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember the last time I saw you at the stop on Saviers Rd. I was so happy to see you and you remembered me. How was I to know it would be the last time I would see you. Life is so fleeting!
You left this earth a little better than if it had never had you in it.
My sincerest condolences to the entire Velo family.

Glenn and I started our police careers at about the same time, in neighboring agencies. I had the privilege of responding to some calls and incidents with him, and he was a great cop. More importantly, I had the opportunity to get to know him on a personal level, often getting together at the local donut shop (yes, cops really did eat donuts in the 80's) to simply talk and get to know each other. Glenn was a great person, and I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him and count it an honor to have been his friend. Though it's been more than 20 years since I've seen him, I was deeply moved when someone shared the news of his passing with me. I think that type of impact says a lot about the man. I pray that the Lord will comfort and console the family at this difficult time.

Although I didn't get to work closely with Glenn, I do recall two things about him: His quiet, kind demeanor and his smile. As I've read the messages posted, so many accurate descriptions of Glenn were pointed out. He was quiet, kind, professional and very respectable. And it's no coincidence that those seem to be the common thread mentioned by so many people! Glenn will be missed, for sure! My sincerest condolences to Susan and their children!

Glenn…
My Bud, my amigo, my confidant….my Soul Brother!

For the past week, now I have laughed, shared stories, smiled and cried (a lot!) …and I am assuming that everyone that have shared this earth with you are feeling the same effects , also!
You are the most whole, non-judgmental, nature loving and Truly Honest Person… that I know and Respect! And you have taught me …”To be me”!

We have shared countless Waves, Laughs and Experiences together and I will never …ever forget one single one of them! And, although our paths had gone in different directions in the past few years, there has probably never been a single week gone-bye, that your Spirit and Wisdom has crossed my mind…and I Thank you! Whether it be music by Carlos Santana, Little River Band or Robin Trower, or maybe our parents (God Bless them!) running into each other on the street, a sip of Coors, a paddle out to the line-up, a good Donut, a burrito at Bobbie’s…and so on! You are there! And I don’t want that to ever stop!

A few memories that I can reflect on, that seem most monumental are…
The one night at a friend’s party, you proceeded to give me an impromptu lesson in Tae Kwan Do … I can still hear the cracking sound of my “Jimmy Durante” nose!
Lesson learned…if you Drink …Don’t Spar!

Or the time you and I took on the Wrath of Nature, Stables ….Storm Surf ….Eight foot faces…Cold water….and really Scary! Only for you to pull my “Unconscious body” out of the surf…I thank you!
Lesson learned …the average man, should not attempt to Drink the entire ocean! 20 plus years …I still taste Saltwater!

OK...I know Monsignor John is checking his watch by now!

So one more….
One that stands out… is the one morning, headed out to hit the morning session at 5am…yes 5am! You were driving your pop’s ole’ reliable green pickup, I as usual ….taking a re-energizing nap! BANG! Imagine for a minute driving down the 101 freeway ….and having the hood of your car fly open! Not good for the driver and not a really good for the Bum sleeping next to you, not a good way to wake up...You drove and I navigated….with my head out the window, as I recall ….it really messed up my hair?
Lesson learned… buy and “Alarm Clock” and Note to self; it’s probably good to latch the hood!

There were so…so many Life experiences and good times that we shared and I could go and on, but I know some day we will be re-united …and we can go over each and every one of them! …and Share some Laughs as well as, some tears!

God bless you my Brother…I know you are out there, riding that “Endless Wave” (Save one for me!) and coexisting with our brothers the Dolphins and Whales…

And each and every time I surf…
I will take in the Warmth of the Sun…
Feel your Presence, in the cool breeze…
…and Submerge myself in our ocean …Engulfing your Spirit!

I would just like to add …something that I read just a short time ago…

Live authentically…
And Savor each Precious Moment of your journey;
Because when you arrive at your destination,
Another journey begins.
Joe Keane

I Love you Brother…
I miss you…
…and I will never Forget!
Wait for me!
Your Brother Mike

I remember the summer Glenn painted our house. It was nice to come home from work and visit with him while he was finishing up. He did an excellent job. There was a tiny bit of overspray on the screen and I made the mistake of asking him what I could use to get it off. He was so concerned about it he gave me the product to get it off. It came off easily and I told him it was fine. The next thing I know he shows up with a gift card to WoodRanch for us. He insisted I take it. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Glenn's family. God Bless you

Glenn, I knew when you were a Reserve Officer at PHPD that you would go far in your Law Enforcement career. You definitely had all the right stuff to be not only the best Police Officer, but the best friend, husband, father and role model. I will miss you my friend and cherish the memories of the times we worked together-You truly made a difference. RIP my friend.

To: Mrs. Velo and Family; I'm lost for words and very heart broken to hear of Glenn. "What an awesome person and an outstanding Officer". He was always there for me and all Parole Agents when we needed help. It was our honor to meet and work with him. " God Bless You" Kitty Thompson

Auntie Gloria, Uncle Ray and Vicki...We will pray that God will keep you strong in this very difficult time. The good memories cannot be erased. The sad memories, in time, will fade. You are truly family to us, now matter how far away we are. Don't hesitate to call "Auntie Fran" for anything. She is only a phone call away. She would be honored. Our Love,

When I think of Glenn Velo, I think of the perfect cop. The perfect mix of street savvy, professionalism, humor, and compassion. When I was trained by Glenn, he showed me how to treat people and where to find the bad guys and dope. He taught me to turn it off when I got home and to spend time with my family. I called him the "Quiet Storm." I remember working with him and just wondering what he was thinking, what great advice he was going to give me next, and when the next time he would ask me how I was doing. When he asked, I knew he really wanted to know how I was doing and if there was anything he could do for me.

"A wealth of knowledge. A true gentleman. Always giving and teaching. One of a kind."

Glenn;

You were a fantastic and noble father, husband, friend, roll model, and partner. I always felt close to you, like the brother I never had. I have fond memories of working together, SWAT call-ups included, and will never forget that call-up on south Blvd whereby your lightening-quick, gallant, and uniquely brave actions; clearly assuming great risk for yourself, while taking defensive-action to buffer a fumbled grenade, ultimately saved the teams bacon as well as the operation itself. You're a hero; you're my hero buddy; and you're a TRUE and GENUINE hero to many many others whose live's you've touched Glenn. It was a distinct honor, priviledge, and pleasure to have you call me friend and partner. I will miss everything about you terribly amigo, and I look forward to meeting again soon at The Pearly Gates. Please rest in beautiful peace now knowing that you gave all that you had to give...with no greater gift to the world than that which you offered with all your heart and soul. Much respect, love, and many blessings to you and your beautiful family.

GV,
So many memories...I am snickering, as I hack at this. You trained me well. The Bullpen will never be the same. No more undercover hang up phone calls, or objects flying across the room, to hit me in my head. Your perfected wide eyed "who me" innocent look and smirk. Thank you for being the mediator between Bernie and the Salt N Pepper team. I know we gave you some gray hairs, but you always had our back!Missing you already. Smooches, Butterflies......

Well Glenn when I heard the news I was deeply saddened. As my 2nd FTO in 1994 I learned so much from you in the way of Officer Safety. But I remember bouncing the heads of two narcotics suspects off the roof of my car when I hit a dip in the road. Oops, good thing they were buckled up. As a detective in 1999 you brought it up again as a reminder of my mad driving skills. I will miss you but I am glad I got to know you. It was an honor my friend.

Glenn, i regret that i didn't get to see you as often as i would have liked. I regret that my sons wont know you how we do. I promise i'll tell them about you so vividly they'll know you in there lives . You are the kindest, most generous person i have ever known. There's a void in our lives where you should be. Thanks for all the good memories and advice. I will miss your smile. I thank God for the time we shared, even though it doesn't feel like enough. Goodbye my Cousin, 'til we meet again. I will always love you.
