John "Woody" Wood passed away on November 4, 2012, in Oxnard at the young age of 51.
John was born on December 2, 1960, in Olympia, Wash. He lived in Port Hueneme and Oxnard, and graduated from Hueneme High School.
John was known for his high level of baseball knowledge and achievements. He led the 1979 Hueneme Vikings to the only CIF Championship game in school history.
John was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1980 where he played five seasons for the organization. John later went on to play in both the Mexican and European Leagues.
Upon his return to the states, he coached the Pacific Suns of the Western Baseball League as well as the Santa Clara High School Varsity baseball team. He also provided private baseball instruction throughout Ventura County.
Later in his life, John worked in construction, mainly in the grading, excavation and concrete business.
John is survived by his children Chelsey, 19 and Johnson, 16; their mother, Lisa Wood; parents, Jackie and Betty Wood; brother, Melvin Wood and wife Jo; nephew, Jason; nieces, Tiffany, Deborah, Reagan; brother, Richard Marx; sister, Jacqueline Connell and husband Kelly; nieces, Delaney, Avery, Jolie; many aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, great-nieces, nephews and countless friends.
He loved spending time with his children and taking them to the beach. He took great pride in his Quileute Tribal descent and always enjoyed family visits to the state of Washington.
John will be remembered most for his ability to make us laugh and knack for sharing a story with great detail and enthusiasm. He had a gift of making friends with complete strangers and effortlessly conversed with people of all walks of life.
John will be deeply missed.
A celebration of John's life will be held at a memorial service on Monday, November 12, 2012, 10 a.m. at Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home, 757 East Main Street, Ventura, CA 93001. A reception will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 600 South "D" Street, Oxnard, CA 93030.
