HAROLD JAMES WEISS(1921-2012)

GENOA – Harold James Weiss, 91, Genoa, Ill., died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at his home.
Born April 30, 1921, in Lanark, to Herbert and Flossie (Draves) Weiss, he married Betty Jean Ortt on Oct. 28, 1944, in Sycamore. After graduating from Genoa High School, Harold attended DeKalb State Teachers College for three years.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in January 1943 and after training in several locations, Harold graduated from Advanced Bombardier School, Big Spring, Texas Dec. 4, 1943. Harold was a bombardier navigator with the 458th B-24 bombardment group at Horsham St. Faith Airfield, Norwich, England. 1st Lt. Weiss was credited with 31 completed missions over France and Germany. Four other missions had to be aborted prior to reaching the destination due to engine failures. During his military service, he received the air medal with three oak leaf clusters and the European theater ribbon with three battle stars. In August, 1945, Harold was presented the Distinguished Flying Cross.
After completing military service, Harold and his wife, Betty, returned to Genoa. Harold built the family home on Brown Street using wood from a barracks he tore down in Rockford. He continued as a private contractor in DeKalb County for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Weiss of Webster City, Iowa. and Margo (Mike) Crook of Montgomery, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herbert and Robert; and wife, Betty.
A visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Slater-Butala Funeral Home of Genoa. A military graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. at the Genoa Cemetery.
