Maria Labandeira Obituary

Maria da Conceição Gomes Labandeira Maria da Conceição Gomes Labandeira was born on November 5, 1926 in Ribeirinha, Terceira, Açores to Antonio Toste Gomes and Maria da Conceição Teixeira Gomes. On Saturday, March 2, 2013, she went to meet her Saviour peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. On November 23, 1946, she married the love of her life João da Rocha Labandeira. They were married for 55 years and were blessed with six children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister Maria Eugenia Silveira and a brother Antonio Toste Gomes. She was the eldest of seven children and only attended pre-school in the Azores because she had to stay home to care of her sibblings while her parents worked on the family land, but her love for knowledge made her a self-educated avid reader and writer. She became a second mother to her sibblings. She took a seamstress course and made much of her family's clothing and ultimately several of her sister's wedding gowns. She was a loving housewife and mother who's tireless hands provided for the needs of her family. She taught her daughters to sew, crochet, embroider, cook and clean house and taught all of her children compassion, respect, honesty and integrity. She was an organized housekeeper and disciplinarian and expected her children to walk the straight and moral path of life. She was a woman of strong faith and taught her children to love and serve the Lord and to live by His words. In June of 1960 together with her husband and their six children came to the United States of America, the country where she and her husband believed to be the "land of opportunity" for their children. The highlights of her life were marrying her childhood sweetheart João, the birth of their children and a pilgrimage trip to the Holy Land, Spain, Portugal, France and Vatican City where together they were blessed to see Pope John Paul II and Dad touched his hand. She was an exceptional mother-in-law and thoroughly enjoyed gathering her family, especially for the Sunday lunches she prepared for the entire family. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren unconditionally and that love was reciprocated. She was a second mother to her grandchildren. The hands that worked so hard, also mended a scraped knee and her tender caress provided assurance that all would be well. Being a good listener, her nieces could go to her for comfort and advice. Her compassionate heart saw the good in everyone and she prayed for those in need. She loved her neighbors who were always looking out for her well being, especially after the passing of her husband in February of 2002. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Centro Portugues de Evangelização e Cultura and Brotherhood of St. Anthony. She is survived by her daughters Mary Aviz (Fernando) of Hilmar, Avelina Parreira (Tony), Maria Pimentel (Frank), Idalina Gregg (Ralph) all of Tulare and two sons John Labandeira (Dina) of Porterville and Tony Labandeira (Sally) of Tulare, Fourteen Grandchildren and 13 Great-Grandchildren and two more on the way. She is also survived by her sisters Maria de Jesus Fraga and Vitalina Parreira (Serafin) of Tulare and Georgina Gomes and Carmelina Medeiros both of Toronto, Canada. We thank all of those who lent a helping hand in caring for our beloved mother. She will forever be missed and remain in the hearts and minds of her children and her entire family. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2013, 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Miller's Tulare Funeral Home, 151 North "H" Street, Tulare, CA. Recitation of the Rosary and Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday, March 8, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 125 East Pleasant Avenue, Tulare, CA with burial at Tulare District Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Aloysius Catholic Church, St. Aloysius Memorial Fund or Donor's favorite charity. Arrangements are entrusted to Miller's Tulare Funeral Home.
