Lyles, Mary Newberry
Mary Newberry Lyles Mary Newberry Lyles, age 93, died on Friday, January 2, 2015, in Carmichael, California, following a brief illness. She was born March 2, 1921, in Chihuahua, Mexico to Mary Emily Alexander Newberry and Lemuel Bascum Newberry. Her early years were fascinating. Her father, a Methodist missionary, also owned a large stationery store. Her older siblings had departed by the time she was three, so she spent her early years with her parents and her governess, Miss Jack. She and Miss Jack shopped the markets and explored Chihuahua together. Mary's friends spoke Spanish, and so did she. Her parents sent her to El Paso, Texas for high school, so she would be forced to learn English. Serendipitously, it was there she met Laurence (Larry) Lyles, her husband of 65 years. Following high school, she chose Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. While at Stephens, she wrote a play in Spanish about Pancho Villa. It was well received, then produced and directed by Maude Adams, a star of stage and screen at the time. She and Larry were married January 5, 1942. After 15 months, he was sent overseas to fight in World War II, spending 27 months in Australia and Japan. During that time Mary lived with his parents in El Paso, where she attained a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Texas, El Paso. Mary and Larry moved to Visalia, California in 1946, where they raised their three daughters-Anne, Mary Bradley and Peggy. Mary was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Daughters of the King, Girl Scouts and 4H. She passionately supported her daughters' interests in horsemanship-tirelessly preparing for horse shows, driving trailers, laundering horse blankets, and hosting weekly training events outside her back door. In 2001 they moved to Eskaton Village in Carmichael to be with their longtime friend Lova Jenkins and near their daughter Peggy. In 2002, Mary authored her popular and fascinating autobiography, The Road From Chihuahua, which is available from Amazon.com . Larry died August 18, 2007. She continued to enjoy the friendships she had established at Eskaton, traveling, visits from family and friends, and spending time with Peggy on her ranch. Mary is survived by her daughter and her husband Anne and Douglas McNeill; her daughter Mary Lyles; her daughter and her husband Peggy and Paul Wagner; four grandchildren, Tristan Amaya, Audrey Amaya, Anam Terra, Oran Terra, Ashlyn Staley, Kaytlynn Staley and Logan Staley. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM, Tuesday, January 27, at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 120 North Hall Street in Visalia, California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Paul's Anglican Church, 120 North Hall Street, Visalia, CA 93291.
