Dorothy Marie Akin

Dorothy Marie Akin Dorothy Marie Akin passed away peacefully in Lacey, Washington, on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at the age of 87. Dorothy was born in Vardaman, Mississippi, to Hollie D. and Evelyn Fleming Young. She attended schools in Bruce, Mississippi and graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1947. She married Ralph Harding in 1949 and moved to California, settling in Exeter and then Visalia where the couple raised three children. She was a music and elementary school teacher, and later in her career became a specialist for hard of hearing children with the Tulare County Department of Schools. In 1982 Dorothy married John W. Akin of Ivanhoe, and they spent 13 happy years enjoying fishing trips and family events until his death in 1995. She was a member of the Visalia First Baptist Church, American Association of University Women, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was known by all as a very loving, gracious and giving person. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Hollie and Evelyn Young, a brother, Hollie Spencer Young, and two sisters, Mildred Walls and Grace Young. She is survived by her three children: Martin Harding (Sue) of Tumwater, WA, Joy Young (Jamey) of Juneau, AK, and Roger Harding of Juneau, AK, six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A memorial service was held December 1st with arrangements by Parker Memorial Funeral Homes of Bruce, Mississippi. The family suggests donations be made to the , Alzheimer's Foundation or a .
