Richard Lee Matthews

Richard Lee Matthews Born August 14th, 1951 End of Watch December 29, 2012 Richard fought all of his life to protect those who could not protect or help themselves. Richard was an infantry "boots on the ground" squad leader in the republic of Viet Nam, 101st Airborne Division, 187th Infantry Battalion Battle Lion "Rakasans" and for 20 additional years as a Reserve - Sergeant for the California Army National Guard, 40th Infantry Division. He was awarded two army commendation medals and three meritorious service medals. Born and raised in Visalia, his love of service continued through his thirty-one years with the Tulare County Sheriff's Department as a Deputy, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. He was the SWAT, Narcotics, Jail, Night Watch, and Search and Rescue Commander, as well as Volunteer Coordinator for the Posse, the Aero Squadron. He led and participated in a decade of medical missions with the Episcopal Church to Honduras . He also served the Salvation Army and the Solano County Search and Rescue. His greatest love was for his family. He is survived by wife Marion Matthews, daughter Melissa David, grandchildren Starlee, Bella and Mazzy. Brothers Rodney and Randy Matthews . He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Warren and Virginia Matthews and twin brother, Robert Matthews. Services will be held at: St. Paul's Church, 120 N. Hall St., Visalia California on January 12th at 2:30 pm.
