Barbara Lou Sayre Barbara Lou Sayre, age 58, a long time resident of Porterville, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2012 from complications of esophageal cancer. Barbara was born on August 20, 1954 in Tulare, CA to Richard (Dick) Sayre and Shirley Kinney. Her early elementary school years were spent in Tulare. Barbara, with her mother and three sisters, moved to SCICON above Springville in 1966. She attended Springville Elementary, Porterville High and graduated from Redwood in Visalia; then later graduated from Chapman University (Visalia) where she earned her teaching credential. Barbara tended bar at Porterville Lanes Bowling Alley and later taught kindergarten through fifth grade for the Porterville School District. During the last three years she taught at Los Robles Elementary. Barbara loved teaching because she enjoyed watching her students flourish. She had an original personality, she was big hearted, clever, and wise beyond her years. She was brilliant at Trivial Pursuit and she sometimes snorted when she laughed. She started writing her first book with her sister, Virginia, the first line was "It was a Xanax kind of day." Whether she was bar-tending or teaching she always engaged in it fully. Her hobbies included reading, bluegrass music, visiting the coast and mountains, but most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with her mom, sisters, kids and grandson, Kolten. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed. Barbara was preceded in death by her father Richard Sayre in 1993, and her former life partner, Vic Young, in 2009. Surviving family includes Barbara's mother, Shirley Kinney and stepdad, Bill Skinner, of San Luis Obispo, her son Ricky Matthews, daughters Kristy Partlow and Kaitlin Fife, her only grandchild Kolten David, son of Kristy, and her "other son" James Blackwell all of Porterville; beloved sisters: Virginia Strawser (Mike) of Visalia, Cynthia Padgett (Greg) of Grover Beach, Eleanor Pitts (Steve) of Arroyo Grande, Shea Gowin (James), Heather Silva (Manuel), Stacy Bostrom (Jeff), Kelly Fox (Jay), her brother Kent Sayre, her stepmother Terry Sayre all of Tulare, and her favorite cousin Barbara Arndt (Mike) of Anacortes, WA. Also mourning Barbara are Kaitlin's father, Dale Fife and his parents Dick and Maxine Fife of Porterville. Barbara has many nephews and nieces that will miss her: Zach Strawser, Tyler Pitts, Melanie Borum (Brian), Marc Padgett (Cydney), Beau Vincent (Tabitha) and Amanda Cole (Scott), Bryce, Drew, & Rylee Gowin, Cameron, Emily & Natalie Silva, Daniel, Irisa, Lily and Hazel Fox and great nephews and nieces: Riley, Addisyn and Chase Borum, Beck, Reece, and Skylar Padgett. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012 at Whitehurst-Peters-Loyd Chapel, 195 N. Hockett in Porterville. A private interment will follow cremation. In lieu of flowers, it was Barbara's wish that a college fund be set up for her grandson, Kolten David. We have selected the "Sierra Higher Learning" account at the Bank of the Sierra in Porterville.
