Charles M. O'Dell Charles M. O'Dell, age 88, passed away on February 15, 2013 with his family by his side. Born in Mannford, OK, a small farm town, on April 14, 1924 to Jurisha and Charles O'Dell. He graduated from Mannford High School in 1942. In 1942 he moved to California and entered into the United States Marine Corps in 1943 during WWII. He attained the rank of Sergeant specializing in field artillery and fire control. He served in the landings at Guadalcanal, Okinawa, and the Solomon Islands. After the war, he was employed by various local farming operations. In 1954 he met and married Jean Swank in 1955. They lived in the Visalia and Ivanhoe area. Later, they purchased the Ivanhoe Locker plant and operated it for over fifty years. As the family grew, each of his sons worked in the family business. During part of this time, he also managed Countryside Meats in Visalia. He had many outside interests including riding horses, camping, fishing, and raising animals. He served as a scout master for both the cub scouts and boy scouts for many years. He served as a volunteer firefighter for Ivanhoe. He was a charter member of the Ivanhoe American Legion and served as a Commander. He was Ivanhoe Man of the Year in 1959. Charles was a life member of the Tulare County Sherriff's Posse and served as President. He was an honorary member of 4H and FFA. He was known as "the cook" for the Sheriff's posse, American Legions and many children's organizations. He loved to share his stories of WWII, life on the Oklahoma farm, and his high school years during the Oklahoma drought. He is survived by his wife, Jean O'Dell, three sons and their spouses, Don and Shannon O'Dell, Terry and Barbara O'Dell, and Mark and Sandy O'Dell and one daughter and spouse, Vickie and Jerry Ward. He had eleven grandchildren Aimee Payne, Nancy Kowalczwk, Jeremy Ward, John Ward, Lora Marx, Shaun O'Dell, Chris O'Dell, Leslie O'Dell, Fawn Myers, Katlyn O'Dell, and Kendra Albanese. He had eighteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Robert and Larry Melvin O'Dell. He was also preceded by his parents, eight sisters, and one brother. Friends and family are welcome to attend: Visitation at Salser and Dillard Funeral Home, 127 East Caldwell from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013. Graveside services 10 a.m. at Woodlake District Cemetery on Friday, February 22, 2013 and a celebration of life at the Elbow Creek Grange Hall, 13781 Avenue 328, immediately following services. Remembrances can be made to your local 4H or FFA club in lieu of flowers. A special thank you goes out to the Tulare County Sheriff's Posse, Elbow Creek 4H and friends for their help and support.
